College Football Power Rankings: Pac-10 Quarterbacks After Week 1
The Pac-10 Conference has been known to produce some of the greatest talent at the quarterback position. Most of the hype surrounding these quarterbacks held true in week one of the college football season, while some fell short of expectations.
This is the first installment of a weekly dose, power ranking the Pac-10 quarterbacks based on their level of play in the previous week.
10. Kevin Prince, UCLA
1 of 10
QB Rating: 70.69
UCLA's starting quarterback Kevin Prince struggled in the Bruin's season opener at Kansas State.
In front of a record home opener crowd at Kansas State, Prince completed just 9 of 26 attempts for 120 yards and one passing touchdown. Along with his 35 percent completion rate, Prince also threw two interceptions to the Kansas State defense.
9. Ryan Katz, Oregon State
2 of 10
QB Rating: 115.82
Ryan Katz was given the reigns of the Oregon State Beavers' offense after the departure of Sean Canfield. The Beavers traveled to Cowboys Stadium to take on the BCS-busters known as the TCU Horned Frogs.
Katz completed 9 of 25 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-21 loss to the Horned Frogs. Making his first start against a top-10 team is not an easy task to do, especially when comparing the rest of the Pac-10's opening games for quarterbacks.
8. Jeff Tuel, Washington State
3 of 10
QB Rating: 121.06
The Washington State Cougars are looking to redeem themselves after going 1-11 in 2009, and their home opener against the Oklahoma State Cowboys wasn't a great way to start.
In Saturday's 65-17 loss to the Cowboys, Tuel showed signs of success and hope for the struggling program. The quarterback completed 14 of 29 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown. While these stats may look bleak, Tuel's average of 15.1 yards on passing plays could be a step in the right direction for the Washington State offense this season.
7. Jake Locker, Washington
4 of 10
QB Rating: 123.36
Jake Locker and the Washington Huskies opened their season with a 23-17 loss at BYU. Locker, who is considered by many as one of the 2010 Heisman front-runners, started his season completing 20 of 37 passes for 266 yards and one touchdown.
Along with Locker's superb passing, he rushed for 26 yards on 11 carries in Saturday's loss. Washington has one of the toughest schedules in the country, which might hinder the talented quarterback's statistics and hopes of getting an invite to New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation.
6. Darron Thomas, Oregon
5 of 10
QB Rating: 156.87
Darron Thomas made his starting debut for Oregon in style with a 72-0 pounding of New Mexico. While the majority of the Ducks' success on Saturday was implemented in the rushing attack, Thomas managed to put up some respectable numbers.
Thomas completed 13 of 23 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Although throwing an interception to a team that was unable to score on the highly ranked Ducks, he showed that there is life after former quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and the Ducks are still a force to reckon with.
5. Steven Threet, Arizona State
6 of 10
QB Rating: 184.17
Steven Threet looked solid in his first game as a starter for the Arizona State Sun Devils. In fact, he set a school debut record for his performance against Portland State.
Threet, who sat out the 2009 season after transferring from Michigan, completed 14 of 21 passes for 239 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The versatile quarterback is fitting in nicely to the new quick strike offensive scheme implemented by first year offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone.
4. Nick Foles, Arizona
7 of 10
QB Rating: 180.65
The Arizona Wildcats' star quarterback is at it again after having an impressive 2,486 yard season in 2009, and leading the 'Cats to a second place finish in the Pac-10.
Foles and the Wildcats traveled to Ohio to take on the Toledo Rockets for their season opener, where the quarterback completed 32 of 37 passes for 360 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
The under-the-radar quarterback could enter the Heisman talk if the Wildcats can gain a win over Iowa on September 18 at home in Tucson, AZ.
3. Kevin Riley, California
8 of 10
QB Rating: 227.86
Kevin Riley threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns while completing 14 of 20 passes in the California Golden Bears 52-3 routing of UC Davis, and he did it all in just over two quarters of playing time.
2. Matt Barkley, USC
9 of 10
QB Rating: 243.86
Matt Barkley and company traveled to the islands to take on the Hawaii Warriors, coming out with a win and an impressive offensive performance.
Barkley, who declined in success in the latter part of the 2009 season, started off strong completing 18 of 23 passes for 257 passing yards and tied a school record with five passing touchdowns.
Being sacked only once and recording zero interceptions in week one is a great start to what could get Barkley into the Heisman discussion.
1. Andrew Luck, Stanford
10 of 10
QB Rating: 246.71
Stanford has yet another Heisman hopeful after the departure of Toby Gerhart in their solid quarterback, Andrew Luck.
Luck and the Stanford Cardinal took on FCS foe Sacramento State with a 52-17 win and sneaking into the AP Poll Top-25. The star quarterback completed 17 of 23 passes for 316 yards and a career high four touchdowns.
Among Luck's four touchdown passes were an 81-yard scoring toss to Doug Baldwin and a 59-yard touchdown to Stepfan Taylor.
