College Football Week 1: The Five Worst Losses of the Weekend
A loss is a loss, and there's certainly no team in America that wants to lose their opening game of the season. But sometimes certain losses can just sting a bit more than others.
Whether it be getting embarrassed on your home field in a monumental upset or getting throttled by a superior team and looking like a high school squad, there were a few teams this week that suffered losses that could really linger and mess with their collective psyche for the next few weeks.
Here are the five losses this weekend that really hurt the most.
5. Tulsa losing to East Carolina
1 of 5Tulsa looked like a had the victory firmly in hand, up 49-45 with just five seconds left against East Carolina on Sunday.
A last second 33 yard Hail Mary from Dominique Davis to Justin Jones would have changed all that.
With the incredible highlight play, the Pirates swiftly upset the Golden Hurricane and dashed their hopes of walking off the field victorious.
4. PITT Losing to Utah
2 of 5
Dave Wannstedt led his Panthers football team into the 2010 season hoping to show everyone that Pittsburgh's top fifteen ranking was justified. But once again, Wannstedt came up short against a more well coached team, the Utah Utes led by Kyle Whittingham.
It's been something that has defined Wannstedt during his time as PITT coach.
Now it's up to his team to bounce back and play like the Big East contenders everyone thought they were before the season started. It will be interesting to see if new quarterback Tino Sunseri can forget about his costly overtime interception.
3. Kansas Losing to North Dakota State
3 of 5
First Northern Iowa upsets the highly favored Jayhawks basketball team in March, and now North Dakota State shocks the football team in September.
The Turner Gill era did not get off on the right foot as Kansas fell to FCS North Dakota State in front of a dumbfounded Memorial Stadium crowd on Saturday Night.
The team managed to score just three points and looked almost totally inept on offense throughout the course of the game.
2. New Mexico losing to Oregon
4 of 5New Mexico, a team that just finished 1-11 in 2009, came into Saturday's contest as heavy underdogs. And they did everything in their power to make the oddsmakers look like geniuses.
Running Back Kenjon Barner, filling in for the suspended LaMichael James, scored five total touchdowns in the first half alone as the Ducks romped the Lobos 72-0.
1. Ole Miss losing to Jacksonville State
5 of 5New Mississippi quarterback Jeremiah Massoli couldn't do enough to save the Rebels from an embarrassing 49-48 home loss to FCS Jacksonville State on Saturday.
The heartbreaking double overtime failure sheds a dark cloud on an already uncertain season.
It will be interesting to see how well the team performs at Tulane next weekend.
