Game Recap Oregon Vs New Mexico: Oregon Looks Young, And Scary Good
Where should I start? This might be the only article I will ever start writing before the 2nd half even begins! 59 points in one half. 2 punt returns by true sophomore Cliff Harris. 5 total touchdowns by Kenjon Barner with 207 total yards, and might I add he did not even play the last half of the 2nd quarter! Oregon looks faster, bigger, and smarter in every aspect of the game.
This is a picture perfect way to start out the 2010 season for the Oregon Ducks. Apparently, word on the street is Kenjon Barner had to leave to accept the Heisman Trophy award midway through the 2nd quarter. Let's be honest though, my 76 year old grandpa could run through the holes that the offensive line was producing.
I tip my hat to Coach Kelly. An optimistic fan can say all they want to about New Mexico being bad, momentum swings, or beginners luck, but come on! To score 59 points in one half against any defense in the country is impressive even if it was a basketball game.
Coach Kelly was interviewed running into the halftime locker room, and he was asked, "Coach who is your projected starting Quarterback for the 2nd half?" After he laughed he replied, "I don't know, lets take a poll. Who do you want to see?" In any other halftime situation that answer would be looked at as cocky and stuck up, but the game gets to a point where you just have to laugh.
My friend is going to college down in California and does not have the luxury of seeing the game on TV so he asked me to text him updates about the game. At one point we both just starting replying "haha" back to each other, because I was sending a text message every 2 minutes with either a turnover or a touchdown, or even in some cases both!
My last article assumed the question, "What can we expect?" A Quarterback with little experience, and our Heisman hopeful running back out due to a suspension. Every Duck fanatic expected a solid win, but not 59 points in one half. It is safe to say Oregon has found it's groove.
The scariest part about all of what has transpired, is that 70 percent of the players that are playing for Oregon, are underclassmen with at least two years of eligibility. You could say Oregon is a fine-tuned, and experienced team, but the reality is they are young, really young. I don't even want to get started about the depth chart. Oregon's 5th string running back is a five start recruit out of high school, who weighs 220 pounds and runs a 4.4 40, and was arguably the top running back out of the class of 2010.
I can go on and on about how deep, how skilled, and how powerful Oregon really is, but everyone knows that. A team that can put up 59 points and over 400 yards of offense in one half is scary good. I am still optimistic though. Oregon goes into a very tough teams territory next week with Tennessee, and are going to have their heads through the roof. That is the real test. But, until then, Oregon looks scary good.
