Villa's Three Man Management Solution: Too Many Cooks Going To Spoil The Broth?

Thomas EnnionSep 4, 2010

The other day i created an article reviewing all the candidates that had been linked to the Aston VIlla Vacancy:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/449277-aston-villa-vacancy-who-is-the-best-man-for-the-job-the-candidates-rated

At the end of the article i concluded by saying that in my opinion either Gerard Houllier or Gareth Southgate should take charge of the club. Since then, more press are speculating that Houllier is to be hired in some capacity. Originally i thought that he would be installed as number one, but with each passing day it looks more likely that he will be installed as a Director Of Football.

If this is to come about, then the managers job will still be vacant. With the many fans i have spoke to, they all seem very possetive on Kevin Macdonald to take charge of the team.So to add experience and to keep the fans happy,  In the papers today, it is being speculated that there will be a three man management "Dream Team".

The "Dream Team" will consist of MacDonald as Manager, Houllier as Director Of Football and former favourite and captain Steve Staunton as Assistant Manager as the icing on the cake. On paper this setup should work, fan favourite, experience and club connections all to boot.

But i can't help but feel uneasy with this setup. All three names have had taste as the soul man in charge of a squad at some point in their careers. I am not an Aston Villa fan, but if i was i would be a little worried with the situation. The role of the Director Of Football has never been one that seems to work. It alwas seems to be one where fans are asking "Who is running my club?", "who really is in charge?".

Tottenham tried it a few years back with much different results. In the end they were managed badly, had a few managers and nearly ended up being relegated before Harry Redknapp took full charge and have now got them into the Champions League with him in charge on his own.

Newcastle the season they got relegated from the Premier League tried to install a similar Managerial Setup with Dennis Wise as a weirdly titled Director Of Football. What made this situation worse was he took control of this role after leading Millwall to the FA Cup Final as manger and other mixed success at Swindon and Leeds United.

I just think if the rumours are true and the "Dream Team" are installed, that it could all end in tears for Aston Villa. History does not lie, it would be a great shame to see the demise of a club with the history of Aston Villa.
