Despite Sanctions, The Creed Continues in Southern California

December 15, 2000 Pete Carroll was hired by the University of Southern California to return the Trojans to national glory. Carroll completed this task by winning an unprecedented seven straight Pacific Ten (12) titles, two AP national titles, two Heisman winners, a plethora of All-Americans and NFL draft picks, but zero BCS National Championships.

It’s not that the “fixed” system denied the Men of Troy to compete for the title, the selfish, but righteous, acts of a player during that tenure has lead to a loss of 30 scholarships, a two year bowl ban and has relegated USC to a non-AQ. (Yes, all that for one player and lack of institutional control)

USC will feel the restraints placed by the BCS system on non-AQ because no matter how many games they win nor how many good teams they beat, they’ll be watching two teams compete in Arizona for the title.

Before the season starts, Non-AQ’s know they won’t be competing for the title. But it’s not just non-AQ. Due to the voting and polls, teams like Washington State could rise and go unblemished but be outside of the title game but inside the BCS at the Rose Bowl.    

Despite the notion above, the Boise State Broncos and the Texas Christian Horned Frogs have built a lasting impression with voters. If the chips fall correctly, we may be in for a repeat of last year’s Fiesta Bowl. But this season, the Non-AQ BCS bowl participant could claim the $30,000 glass trophy.

Visions of the glass trophy are not out of sight for the Trojans but those visions must start now and end with a victory over the SEC Champion at the 2013 national championship game in Miami.

I think if Sanchez stays he wins a Heisman but the next stiff arm trophy that could land in Heritage Hall could go to Matt Barkley. He has yet to announce whether he will stay for his senior season but why not go the route of Mr. Leinart?

Barkley could finish his degree by the end of his junior season, take Ballroom Dancing his senior year and focus on leading the program back to the BCS ncG. However, he might have to endure mini-playoff wins—at least we hope.   

Players that were devoted to USC stayed and the weak left. Those who are true to the program should share that vision: In the Orange Bowl winning the title. (Just make sure they don’t have too much fun like the other USC)

The Trojans have fell victim to sanctions of the NCAA many times and have continued to push their way back to the top. The Spirit of Troy will play the fight song and the dedicated followers will continue to signal the “V” but as Lane Kiffin’s team is set to battle the Warriors, a New Dynasty, a New Era, and new beginning dawns. A journey starts once again but the creed continues: FIGHT ON!!!!
