Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy: Should It Be Awarded To Next Best?
If the Heisman Trust comes to the decision to take the Heisman Trophy awarded to Reggie Bush back, should it be awarded to another player?
University of Texas head coach Mack Brown thinks it should and he thinks it should be awarded to former Texas quarterback Vince Young.
Young was an amazing college football player with incredible speed and elusiveness and had Bush not been playing that year, Young would have definitely been a deserving recipient of the distinguished trophy.
However, Bush did play and everything he did on the field was legal and legitimate.
The fact that Bush violated NCAA rules off the field is irrelevant at this point. On the field, Reggie Bush was the best player in college football and earned and deserved the Heisman Trophy.
Because Bush’s violations had no bearing on his performance on the field, the award should remain in his possession. However, if the Heisman Trust decides that the best option is to take it back, then the award should go to no one.
Had Bush’s violations enhanced his performance on the field, like the use of steroids or performance enhancing drugs, then the issuance of the trophy to Young or another player would be validated. But they did not and therefore he was indeed the best player and is still deserving of the trophy.
If Vince Young is given the Heisman Trophy, an award given to the best college football player, the legitimacy of the trophy is compromised because he was not the best player in college football.
