Teams That Should Be Disqualified from BCS Title for Weak Schedules

Christopher AdamsAug 31, 2010

Easy non-conference games are a plus for big-name college football programs, putting some easy wins up on the board before hitting conference play. But should these cupcake games be scheduled if these certain teams are being included in the BCS mix?

While these teams may have tough conference games, if they truly plan on being at the top of the college football world, they need to ditch the cupcake non-conference schedule.

Then there are the programs that are ranked in the top 25, but play in mediocre non-BCS conferences, and play one or two real games a season.

The following is a list of five teams that are currently sitting in the AP Top 25 Preseason Rankings that should be taken out of contention for BCS Title talk due to their weak non-conference schedule, or lack of a respectable conference schedule.

Boise State Broncos

This is an obvious one. The Boise State Broncos take on two quality opponents out of their 12 scheduled games.

The Broncos undoubtedly have a great team, full of talent. But their conference and the schedule they play will forever haunt them in being taken seriously by the majority of fans and critics alike.

Heading into the 2010 season, Boise State has its highest preseason AP ranking in school history, sitting pretty at No. 3. But this all could change when they take on No. 10 Virginia Tech in their opening game.

Other than the highly anticipated Virginia Tech showdown that could make or break their National Championship dreams, they play one other "real" team, or BCS team in other words, on September 25th against the Oregon State Beavers.

The rest of the Broncos' 2010 schedule is conference play, which would be considered cupcake games for the BCS teams.

Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin should have no problem starting off the season 4-0 with their cupcake non-conference schedule.

The Badgers start the season off at UNLV, followed by home games against San Jose State, Arizona State, and Austin Peay. Their bout against Arizona State is about as tough as it comes for the No. 12 ranked Wisconsin team, which isn't much seeing that the Sun Devils have just suffered their first back-to-back losing seasons since the 1950s.

Although facing No. 2 Ohio State, No. 9 Iowa, and a steady Northwestern team, the Badgers got the luck of the draw with the remainder of their conference playing Michigan, Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Purdue, all teams that finished in the bottom half of the conference in 2010.

TCU Horned Frogs

The Texas Christian Horned Frogs have not been known to take on a tough schedule, which is difficult to do when the school plays in the Mountain West Conference.

The Horned Frogs take on the Oregon State Beavers in their opening game, their only preseason ranked opponent on the schedule. Other notable games include BYU and Baylor at home, and traveling to take on the Utah Utes.

It looks like it could be another undefeated season for the AP No. 6 TCU with remaining home games against Tennessee Tech, Wyoming, Air Force, and San Diego State, and away games against Southern Methodist, Colorado State, UNLV, and New Mexico.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are starting out the 2010 season ranked No. 8 in the AP Preseason Poll. While looking at the 'Huskers schedule, the team has potential to move down in the rankings, and not due to their talented roster, but rather a weak schedule.

Nebraska's non-conference games consist of Western Kentucky, Idaho, South Dakota State, and at Washington. A point can be made about the game against the Washington Huskies, having Jake Locker and numerous weapons at his disposal, but this is a Huskies team that has not had a winning season since 2003.

West Virginia Mountaineers

The No. 25 West Virginia Mountaineers get credit for one of their non-conference games—the battle at No. 21 LSU on September 25th, but the remaining four non-conference games are less than respectable when trying to climb up the ranks.

The Mountaineers play at Marshall and have home games against Coastal Carolina, Maryland, and UNLV before hitting conference play. The cupcake out-of-conference schedule is a nice boost for the wins column, but should hurt them if they somehow rise to be National Championship contenders.
