Steven Threet to Start for Arizona State Sun Devils at Quarterback

After an offseason full of uncertainty at the quarterback position, the Arizona State Sun Devils have named redshirt junior Steven Threet as their starter for the upcoming season.

Threet beat out sophomore Brock Osweiler for the starting job. 

The Past

Threet was a four-star recruit coming out of Adrian High School in Michigan. He was the No. 9-rated quarterback according to Rivals.com and the 12th-rated quarterback according to Scout.com.

Threet enrolled at Georgia Tech, but transferred to Michigan before the season began. He started eight games for the Wolverines in 2008 and threw for nine touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Threet transferred to Arizona State following the 2008 season and sat out 2009 due to NCAA rules. 

Spring Game/Fall Practices

Threet struggled in the spring game, in which he went 9-of-27 for 117 yards with three interceptions.

Threet has been progressing quickly in the fall and has found a comfort level in the ASU offense. Threet told the Daily Telegram he feels comfortable in the ASU offense:

“I feel like I’m in an offense that is one that I fit well in with my skill set. Obviously it has taken a little time (to get adjusted) and obviously I will be more comfortable.”

ASU coach Dennis Erickson has mentioned Threet has a quick release and a strong arm, but needs to improve on his accuracy.

In the fall scrimmage, Threet completed nine of 15 passes for 97 yards and rushed for a one-yard touchdown.

Threet told the Arizona Republic that he learned a lot about himself during the quarterback competition. 

"If you want something bad enough, you just keep working at it and do whatever you can to make it happen," Threet said.

Only a few Pac-10 quarterbacks have fewer career starts than Threet, but the new ASU quarterback has Sun Devils fans excited for 2010.
