Starting Somewhere: WR Jamal Gray of Arizona Western Comes to Play
Sometimes starting small is the best way to go.
Some of the greatest players in NFL history have come from small schools. Donald Driver (Alcorn State) and some guy named Jerry Rice (Mississippi Valley State University) are two names that come to mind when thinking of great players from small schools at the wide receiver position.
Jamal Gray wants his name on that list.
Gray, a 6'1", 193-pound wide receiver from Chicago, is beginning his collegiate career at Arizona Western, a Division II school.
Gray, whose season began today, showed pride and emotion when posting on his Facebook account, saying, "On the road to our game, fourteen division-1 scouts in attendance which means I'm on top of my game."
With confidence Gray spoke in a one-on-one conversation with me on what we should know about this underrated player. The student-athlete is coming to the Matadors as a freshman ready to make an impact.
Speaking on his game, Gray said, "I can play in the pro/spread offense. Either style fits me because of my speed and hands to make sure I complete the play." While he goes out there for the love of the game, Gray also has many attributes besides talent that he would like others to know about.
As for the story behind the story, Gray says, "I just want people to see that I am a good athlete. I work hard day in and day out. I am one of the most coachable players, always listening, always asking and using what is said to improve myself."
While he can be every coach's dream, Gray has his own aspirations: "I play my game like Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. Using the tools I was given to be the best player I can be, I hope to be in Maclin's position soon."
That position is the NFL. While Gray's senior season came to an early end due to injury, he did have 19 catches, 300 yards, and two touchdowns. He's fully healthy, and if Gray can continue to progress, you will hear his name on ESPN just like Jeremy Maclin.
