The Five Most Intriguing ACC Conference Games of 2010

Jeffrey FannAug 28, 2010

The college football season is nearly here, and it's about time.

At All About Sports we've looked at the ACC's top non conference games, but we have yet to really look at the ACC's most interesting matchups. It was tough to narrow the list down to just a handful of conference games, but here are the five most intriguing matchups.

1) Georgia Tech  vs Virginia Tech  11/4

This game has decided the Coastal Division Champion for five straight years. Last year the Hokies hinted that Georgia Tech was using illegal blocking techniques. This year the ACC makes changes to their crack back rules.

Is it a conspiracy or just coincidence?

Throw in highly competitive coaches Frank Beamer and Paul Johnson and this is the ACC's game of the year.

2) Miami vs Virginia Tech 11/20

The Hokies flat out destroyed the Canes 31-7 in Blacksburg last year. Miami QB Jacory Harris looked more lost and frustrated in this game than at any other point in the season. There's only one week left in the regular season after these two teams meet. The loser here probably won’t win the division.

3) Clemson vs Florida St 11/13

This is a rivalry just itching to burst out nationally beyond the Bowden Bowl fame of the earlier part of the decade.

No Bowdens in this one.

These are two of the bigger fanbases in the ACC and it's always a great atmosphere when they hookup. Boston College is a player in the Atlantic Division, but I believe the winner of this game wins the division. The Tigers have won five of the past seven matchups with Florida State.

4) Boston College vs Virginia Tech 9/25

This is a little bit of an under the radar ACC game that I'm very interested in. The reason is, I'm not quite sure how good BC is. A win by the Eagles and the rest of ACC will have to take notice. A loss by the Hokies and suddenly Virginia Tech isn't as good as expected. It also matches up the two best running backs in the ACC, BC's Montel Harris and VT's Ryan Williams.

5) Georgia Tech vs North Carolina 9/18

This might be a season defining game for North Carolina. With all the negative publicity surrounding the Heel's program because of the NCAA investigation and the possible player suspensions, a loss here and UNC's season might spiral out of control.

I really want to see how North Carolina responds in their first conference game after a trying offseason.

Honorable Mention

Florida State vs Miami 10/9

Remember when this was the game of the year in college football? That was many years ago. Now, I find it funny that whoever wins this game nowadays is suddenly "back." It's kind of like when Tiger Woods has one good round in a tournament this year, "he's back!" The game this season will serve as a barometer of which program is moving forward, not who's necessarily all the way back.
