Easy Does It: Ohio State, Florida Among Teams With Only Four Away Games
Do preseason top 10 teams need to travel to prove they belong there?
Ohio State and Florida are two top 10 preseason teams who will only be playing four true road games, and if they go undefeated they would certainly be in the BCS title game.
This marks the second straight year where Florida has only played four away games, and despite this they were one game away from reaching the BCS title game in 2009.
For Florida, this is excusable, as they will need to prove themselves in the difficult SEC championship. The Big 10 season ends in November and has no such championship game.
Ohio State will bring Miami to Columbus, but Boise State received little respect for bringing in similarly ranked Oregon in 2009, even having three loss Oklahoma State threatening their BCS bid at the end of the season.
Along with Florida, three other SEC teams play only four away games in 2010, LSU, Arkansas, and Auburn, all top 25 preseason teams.
Virginia Tech is another top 10 team with only four road games. They play Boise State opening week at a "neutral site" in Landover, Maryland, where they will travel 16 miles while Boise will be traveling over 2000.
Out of conference road games are often mentioned when non BCS teams get themselves into the mix, but for BCS affiliated teams, the excuse you'll hear is the strength of the conference.
Rightfully so? Maybe. Would it matter if Ohio State went to the MAC teams' stadiums to lay 80 points on them? Probably not, but the fact remains, they won't in 2010.
