Can Jacory Harris Bring The Heisman and a Championship To Miami?
After the first month of the 2009 College Football season, Jacory Harris and the Miami Hurricanes were the talk of the country. As the Canes went through their brutal schedule, there was talk about Miami being back for the first time in years. The buzz created around Jacory Harris was overwhelming. Harris emerged and Heisman talk started to circulate.
Harris was unable to handle the pressure and he started forcing the ball. In a four game stretch late in the season he thre 9 interceptions.
"I'm better suited to deal with it all now," Harris said. about the pressure of the Heisman.
Harris formed an an alter-ego called J12 at the time of his Heisman buzz. Harris even stated he was going to wear a pink suit at the trophy presentation and drink from a pimp glass. As the season progressed, Harris's errors mounted and he faded from the Heisman race. The Canes finished 4-3 in their final 7 games.
"It's just a great feeling to have your name mentioned. Of course you want to win it, but at the same time, you have a team that you have to help win. You can't win the Heisman if your team isn't winning." said Harris.
It's great to see that Harris has matured and realizes he needs his team as much as his team needs him.
In 2010 the Canes will set a similar stage for Harris. The Hurricanes start off with a warm-up at FAMU, but then travel on a daunting road trip that includes 2nd ranked Ohio State, a dangerous Pitt team, and recent foe Clemson. The Canes could emerge from this three game away trip as a Top 5 team. They finally come home to play their biggest rival, the Florida State Seminoles.
If the Canes can start the season at 5-1 or better, the Jacory Harris Heisman train could be rolling. Harris is an unbelievable talent with the poise of a NFL professional. He passed for 3200 yards and threw for 24 touchdowns in 2009.
Throwing interceptions was his one flaw, he was second in the nation with 17 interceptions. With a full year under his belt and new found humbleness, he is sure to progress. This very well could be Jacory's year.
The key to the season could be exercising the demons of North Carolina, where Harris threw 4 interceptions. The Canes have not beaten Butch Davis's Tar Heels in the Randy Shannon era.
This year seems different.
The Canes finish the season with key games against Coastal ACC champion Georgia Tech, rival Virginia Tech, and another dangerous Florida team in USF.
The Hurricanes have a very difficult schedule in 2010. Six of their opponents are ranked in the Top 20.
If Jacory Harris can keep the mistakes down, and focus throughout the season, he could be looking at a Heisman Trophy, a 10+ win season, and a possible national championship.
