English Premier League Watch: Arsenal, Chelsea Dominate in Match Day 2

Jonathan WooAug 23, 2010

As the Premier League season rolls on, the early glimpses of what have been may turn into what will be for the future.

Arsenal and Chelsea display top form, Everton struggles to find the necessary goals, Aston Villa shows signs of breakdown, these are only a few of the talking points in Match Day 2 of the Premiership.

Chelsea and Arsenal showed no mercy against their opponents over the weekend, finishing Wigan and Blackpool quite impressively with a couple of 6-0 results.

Carlo Ancelotti’s squad drilled a Wigan side that has yet to find any sort of rhythm so far in the young season. The Blues simply outworked and outplayed Roberto Martinez’s side at the DW Stadium.

Headlining the victory, though not appearing in the score sheet, was Didier Drogba’s unselfish play, setting up goals for Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou.

The Gunners buried the promoted Blackpool early with three first-half goals, including two by Arsenal’s star Theo Walcott, who finished with a hat trick.

After multiple chances to put away his first goal for his new club, Marouane Chamakh finally netted one on a brilliant header late in the game to cap off the scoring.

A Weak Exhibition

Aston Villa dropped an egg at St. James’ Park, losing 0-6 in embarrassing fashion to Newcastle, which quickly turned around from a harsh defeat to start the season.

Perhaps Martin O’Neill’s surprise resignation unraveled the team’s chemistry and production, but the loss of a key midfielder in James Milner surely doesn’t help.

A return to European competitions is bleak should Villa continue to play this poorly away from Villa Park.

A Wrong-Footed Start

Typically a highly competitive club, Everton disappointingly came away with just a point against the Wolves in a 1-1 draw, definitely not the start manager David Moyes was looking for after losing last week at Blackburn.

The club’s struggles early could have larger implications late in the season, if any chance at European qualification is to be realized.

The squad lacks a sure finisher in the final third to complement the inspiring play from the midfield.

It’s early, but straining to score goals against weaker competition only means worse nightmares for the men from Goodison Park.

Another addition to the squad may be on his way.

City’s Stars Shine Bright

Manchester City is constantly nagged on for the deep pocket approach during the transfer season, signing a number of super talents to compete with its current roster of top players.

But new arrival, James Milner, got involved right away in Monday’s 3-0 win over Liverpool, delivering a cross to former Villa and now City teammate, Gareth Barry, in the 13th minute to open the scoring.

Carlos Tevez found his name on the score sheet twice, though Micah Richards deserves as much credit.

Yaya Touré had a solid effort, as did Adam Johnson who got the start, though his typical role as a substitute may have him playing with a chip on his shoulder.

Reproducing the effort and result versus Liverpool against the likes of the rest of the Premier League will bode well for manager Roberto Mancini, as his club will need to finish in the top four merely to scrape the bottom of this season’s expectations.

Improving form will only make future performances more dynamic and exhilarating.

Transfer News

William Gallas made the move from Arsenal to North London rivals Tottenham last week, a deal that will see a solid defender to a Spurs side that is thin at the moment. Gallas’s arrival will shore up any defensive shortcomings in the immediate future.

Tottenham also are reportedly interested in Real Madrid’s Lassana Diarra and Everton’s Steven Pienaar.

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is holding out, inching closer to what could be a move to Barcelona. Mascherano’s teammate, Dirk Kuyt, also expressed interest in a move away from Anfield. Kuyt reportedly received an offer from Inter Milan.

The Reds also sent midfielder Alberto Aquilani to Juventus on a one-year loan agreement.

Goal of the Year Contention

Gareth Bale gave a magical display of talent for Tottenham over the weekend, scoring what may be an early entry for goal of the year in the Premiership.

On the road against Stoke City, Bale received a high ball across the goal, 12 yards out, and blasted a beautiful, curving volley into the corner in what was the winning goal for Spurs.

Top notch.
