Texas Longhorns Backup QB Position: The Case for McCoy
Over 13,000 career yards, 112 touchdown passes, and the most wins ever by a college quarterback. College football fans everywhere call that person, "A college football legend." Case McCoy calls that person "big brother."
McCoy, a three-star prospect out of Graham High School, followed older brother Colt's footsteps to the University of Texas and figured to be in a battle with fellow frosh quarterback Conner Wood for the third string position behind senior Sherrod Harris. Then, things began to get interesting.
Sherrod Harris, in a surprising move, quit the football team, paving the way for a unforeseen situation: a battle for the No. 2 quarterback position by two freshman with no college playing experience whatsoever.
Though most fans automatically gave the edge to the more celebrated prospect Wood, offensive coordinator Greg Davis insists that that contest is dead even. Physically, Wood is the more gifted of the two quarterbacks. He has the height, and the arm, and had the higher rating coming out of high school, garnering a four-star rating.
Throughout the summer practices so far, the physical differences between the two freshman has been noticeable, with Wood having a strong zip on his passes and looking poised and comfortable throwing down field. McCoy, on the other hand, much like his older brother, looks more comfortable throwing the short to intermediate passes to his receivers.
To win this battle, McCoy will have to use the attributes that made his brother a legend. The intangibles, the things that cannot be measured on a stat paper, or a scouting report, will have to be McCoy's greatest weapon in this battle.
If McCoy can, like his brother, cut down on the interceptions, the mistakes, and find ways to lengthen drives—be it with his feet, or with making the smart throws, five yards out or 20 yards out—he will win the battle for the No. 2 spot.
The question is, can McCoy replicate the magic that his brother had? Can he fight the odds, and win the job? Time will tell, and luckily for the fans, decision day is getting closer and closer.
