Ohio State Recruiting Wish List: Five Possibilities To Catch Texas

Michael PintoAug 17, 2010

Ohio State currently has the No. 2 recruiting class in the country, and with Texas missing out on 5-star tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins the thought has arisen that the Buckeyes can potentially leapfrog the Longhorns for the No. 1 spot.

With 17 commitments already on the books and most of Ohio State's top prospects already locked up, the options out there for top-end talent have dwindled a bit. But there's still some blue-chip talent available that the Buckeyes have a legitimate shot at securing.

It's still a longshot that Ohio State surpasses Texas' monster recruiting class, but here are five players that could make it happen.

If the Buckeyes land a couple of these guys it'll get interesting at the top. If they land them all, Ohio State may very well lay claim to the No. 1 class in the country.

Doran Grant, CB

1 of 5

Grant is the best cornerback prospect in the country, rated No. 1 by Rivals and No. 2 by Scout. Considering his smallish frame, the rankings say a whole lot about the talent this kid brings to the table.

Grant is probably better than advertised and definitely fits the bill at a generous 5'10" and 175 lbs.

He's lighting-fast, tests off the charts athletically, tackles with a lot of power, and has a great nose for the ball.

You can't ask for too much more out of a high school cornerback and the best part is Grant hasn't even come to reaching his ceiling yet.

The Akron, Ohio native recently cut his list of suitors down to 10 possibilities: Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Cincinnati, USC, UCLA, and Penn State are all still in the running and it's anyone's game right now.

Damian Swann, CB

2 of 5

Swann is a very athletic prospect with the potential to play either cornerback or safety in college. But his skill-set at receiver is also intriguing.

In high school, he lined up at free safety most of the time, but most experts see him as a corner on the next level due to his unique combination of size and speed. At 6'0" and 175 lbs, he presents an ideal candidate to match up against bigger receivers.

He's got a great set of hands and has a knack for making big plays, but his man-to-man coverage skills are still a little raw.

Swann plays off of his instincts and athleticism right now, but when he gets to the next level he'll need to rework his technique and learn to play more disciplined. The tools are all there, though.

It looks like Swann is going to make his final choice between Alabama and Georgia, but he lists Florida and Ohio State among his top four as well. So there's still hope on that front.

Ejuan Price, MLB

3 of 5

Price is ranked as one of the top middle linebackers in the country by both Scout and Rivals and displays an uncanny ability to get into the middle of a play and make something happen.

He's explosive off the ball, moves deceptively fast, and once he locks onto the ball-carrier he's bee-lining straight for him and making a play.

There aren't many players who can shed blockers with as much consistency and fewer that use their hands and body with such polished technique.

At 6'3" and 235 lbs, Price has the size and athleticism to play inside or outside and could even move back and play safety depending on where he lands; he definitely has the hands and hips to get it done in centerfield.

Price lists his "co-favorites" as Iowa and Ohio State, saying that neither has the advantage at the moment. Both schools would love to have this kid.

Jabari Gorman, S

4 of 5

Gorman is a 4-star safety and is ranked No. 10 at his position by Rivals. He's a very versatile athlete that plays wide receiver, running back and safety in high school, but scouts see his future on the defensive side of the field.

He's a natural ball-hawk with great natural instincts, but he tends to play a bit out of control at times and needs to be more disciplined to succeed on the next level.

Because he plays a lot of receiver, Gorman can flip a switch when the ball's in the air and does a great job of getting his hands on the ball in pass coverage.

A high energy player and a vocal leader, Gorman is raw, but he's got elite potential.

He lists his three finalists as Miami, Ohio State, and Alabama. Gorman expects to reach his decision after his official visits later this year.

Darius Jennings, WR

5 of 5

At 5'11" and 175 lbs, 4-star receiver Jennings isn't a traditional speedster, but he moves incredibly fast in traffic. He's got a short stride and has a really good first burst off the line of scrimmage.

He can change gears about as fast as anyone and those short, choppy steps let him accelerate very fast in space. He can be a force in the Wildcat as he's got experience running the system in high school.

It's there that you can really see his field vision and ability to shift through traffic and find the running lanes.

He'd be an ideal slot receiver, but needs to bulk up some before he can make too big of an impact on the next level.

Jennings lists his top 10 as: UCLA, Ohio State, Boston College, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. UCLA, Maryland, and Virginia Tech are pursuing him the hardest.
