Just How Many Players Do Celtic Want to Sign?

AEK Athens defender Daniel Majstorovic will sign for Celtic on Saturday, pending a medical with the club.

The Swedish central defender will become Neil Lennon's eighth signing of the summer and is expected to sign a two-year contract.

Majstorovic, who played from the start in his country's 3-0 win over Scotland in midweek, has 34 caps. Aged 33, the imposing player will end Lennon's search for experience at the heart of his backline, having missed out on Sol Campbell earlier in the window.

It is understood the player has already agreed personal terms with the SPL club and will be immediately added to the Celtic squad for their Europa League qualifier with FC Utrecht, the first leg of which will take place on Thursday.

“I spent two beautiful years in Greece and with AEK Athens,” Majstorovic told AEK's official website on Friday. “I'm glad I had the opportunity to play at such a great team. I want to thank everyone who worked this time, and the world of the club for its support.

“For me, moving to Celtic is a very good chance and they are a major European club. Tomorrow [Saturday], I go to Glasgow to go through medical screening and then sign my contract.”

The well-travelled Majstorovic, who in joining Celtic will sign for his eighth senior club, will provide much needed options in defence for Lennon and comes on the recommendation of current assistant boss Johan Mjallby.

The 6ft 4in defender has spent the last two seasons with AEK Athens and had one year left to run on his contract with the Greeks, who are due to play Dundee United in the Europa League this mont.

Majstorovic moved to Athens from Swiss club Basel in 2008, having forged an unlikely reputation as a frequent goal scorer at St Jakob-Park. He was their second top scorer in the 2007/08 season, scoring 11 goals and finishing one behind leading marksman Marco Streller.

Having started his career with Swedish club IF Broomapojkarna, the defender moved to Germany to play for Fortuna Koln in 1997, before returning to his home country to play for Vasteras SK.

Malmo FF then came calling in 2001, before Dutch club Twente snapped him up three years later. Majstorovic lasted just one season in Holland however, moving on to Switzerland in a 1.3 million Euros move.
