Texas Recruiting Wish List: Who Else Will the Longhorns Add in 2011?
As most college football recruiting fans are aware, Texas is assembling what might be the best recruiting class head coach Mack Brown has ever put together.
They've brought in top talent at nearly every position and have just a few more pieces to consider before calling it a night and closing the books on their 2011 class.
Texas has 22 players committed so far while the magic number is 25. That's the number of prospects expected to be brought on board, leaving just three open spaces to fill out the year.
The Longhorns are in search of another running back, a tight end, and possibly, a defensive end.
So who are the prime candidates to finish things off in Austin for 2011? Here the possibilities out there.
The 2011 Recruiting Class: Where Does Texas Stand?
1 of 7
5-Star Commitments: 6
4-Star Commitments: 9
3-Star Commitments: 7
Just look at these names: Christian Westerman (OT), Desmond Jackson (DT), Sheroid Evans (S), Garrett Greenlea (OT), Leroy Scott (CB), Steve Edmond (LB), Josh Turner (CB), Sedrick Flowers (OG), Quincy Russell (DT), Quandre Diggs (CB), and Cedric Reed (DE).
What do all these players have in common? They're all ranked in the top eight at their respective positions.
That's just a scary amount of talent and it makes it easy to see how Texas could field the top recruiting class in the country without securing any more commitments.
Now all the Longhorns have to do is is land their top remaining targets and they will have nothing left to want.
Plan A: Malcolm Brown, RB
2 of 7
As a junior, Brown rushed for over 2,000 yards with 33 touchdowns. He's a powerful rusher that will put his shoulder down and punish defenders, wearing them down as the game goes on.
He won't wow you with his speed, but as a downhill rusher he's about as impressive as they come. Brown explodes into defenders and keeps his legs moving relentlessly, winning battles more times than not.
At 6' and 210 lbs, he's big enough to get on the field and make an impact right from day one and would instantly become the most talented back on the Longhorns roster.
While most experts consider Brown to be a Texas lean, he's also very high on Alabama and it wouldn't be surprising to see him go that route, although the thought here is Brown commits to the Longhorns.
Plan B: Aaron Green, RB
3 of 7
Aaron Green is the complete package when it comes to running backs. He runs with purpose, can make the first man miss, gets downfield in a hurry, and breaks tackles with surprising speed.
He's undersized at 5'11", 185 lbs, so he needs to bulk up or he just won't stay in one piece at the next level, but that's about all there is not to like about this kid.
There might not be anyone in the country who can change direction quite as fast as he can. Defenders are regularly left staring at the dust.
Green hasn't had much contact with Texas over the last couple months and that has a lot to do with their confidence that Brown will eventually commit. If he does, that wouldn't leave room for Green to join the party.
So the reality with Green is he's only an option if Brown chooses Alabama.
Plan A: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE
4 of 7
Seferian-Jenkins presents a near-ideal target to throw to at 6'7" and 245 lbs. Because of his size, strength, and athleticism, he is almost always open and rarely has to beat out his defender for the ball.
His route-running is polished and he does a great job of getting off the line of scrimmage fast, generally embarrassing anyone who tries to jam him.
When he's extending his arms and using his hands to catch the ball at it's highest point, there's no way to stop him from making a play.
The 5-star tight end will be making his commitment on August 16 and is down to Texas and Washington and right now it's really a flip of the coin where he's going to end up playing.
Plan B: Chris Barnett, TE
5 of 7
Barnett is one of the top tight ends in the country, ranked No. 7 at his position by Scout and No. 15 by Rivals.
He's one of the most versatile athletes in the class and literally can do it all on the high school level. He played both sides of the ball as a running back, receiver, tight end, quarterback, offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, and even safety.
Of course most of his minutes and production came as a tight end, but it speaks volumes toward his abilities as a football player that he was able to succeed in so many different roles.
As a tight end, he's the all-around package and one of the best pass-catchers in the nation.
If Seferian-Jenkins goes with the Huskies then Barnett becomes the next target on the list as it's obvious the Longhorns are in need of a quality tight end.
Plan A: Jermauria Rasco, DE
6 of 7
Rasco has improved tremendously every year and that's something to take note of when looking at a prospect. He's an elite defensive end with a very high ceiling and he's only getting better as he ages.
He's got great instincts and discipline, but his technique and movements are still on the raw side. If he can learn to add some weapons to his arsenal and get off the ball quicker, he could end up being the best defensive end in the class.
For someone with so much to work on, seeing how fast he's able to disengage from his blockers and engage ball-carriers is eyebrow raising.
Rasco is being heavily recruited by Texas, LSU, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, and UCLA. He may very well end up being the last piece of the puzzle for the Longhorns, who are still searching for another defensive end.
The Other Options: Anthony Wallace?
7 of 7
While Texas' options at running back and tight end are obvious, the waters are murky for the third and final piece to the Longhorn's puzzle.
While they would like to get their hands on another defensive end with Sam Acho and Eddie Jones coming off the books after the 2010 season, beyond Jermauria Rasco there aren't any elite options out there that Texas is pursuing.
In fact, the Longhorns have recruited so well that there really aren't many options remaining in general. It seems the next course of action beyond Rasco would be to pursue 5-star linebacker Anthony Wallace.
Wallace is considered an Oklahoma lean, but Texas is still in the running and could potentially land the versatile defender if others chips don't fall their way.
It's also a possibility that Texas bypasses a third addition if Wallace goes elsewhere.
