2010 College Football Predictions: Notre Dame's First Six Games

Thomas McDonnellAug 7, 2010

Consider me in the category of being optimistic towards Notre Dame's 2010 outcome. People have there questions about Notre Dame, and rightfully so. They finished with 6 wins last season with many problems, and are far from being worthy of any high expectations.

But when looking closely at ND, you see that many of the problems were not a product of being outclassed by talent, or depth. They were beaten because of poor coaching, bad schematics, and poor fundamentals. Not to mention a turbulent, and divided locker room.

Most of the games ND lost last season would not have been lost by a competent coach. Charlie Weis was a mess. He played favorites, ignored conditioning, could not teach, and certainly could not develop any non-skilled position on offense, and was clueless when it came to defense. The players were frustrated, and confused. Do not expect Notre Dame to play so undisciplined, and unorganized again.

To beat Notre Dame you are going to need your "A game". The Fighting Irish will have heart, discipline, and be conditioned to win physically as well as mentally.

Here are my predictions;

Purdue

ND will start off alittle slow because of nerves..etc. Purdue will be fired up with the Miami transfer throw the rock and move the ball early, after 1 quarter I think it will be a 7-7 game. Half way through the second quarter ND starts clicking from a Gary Gray INT, and everything falls into place. ND cruises to a big win.

Purdue- 17

9/11 (1-0)

Michigan

Michigan should not have even been in the game last year. I was in disbelief. It was a disgrace, and Charlie Weis fault that ND lost. Brian Kelly will have our boys playing to their potential, and do his job of putting our boys in a position to win. Michigan's strength on offense plays into ND's strength on defense. Our line and linebackers will be conditioned and playing in 5th gear with a scheme that they understand and makes sense. Coincidentally, our strength on offense plays in Michigan's weakness on defense, Michigan's corners will not have an answer for Notre Dame. ND will be fired up and looking for revenge for last year. Michigan will have to begin throwing the ball a lot during the 2nd quarter, and turning it over. ND will route Michigan. (like they should have last year)

ND-34

UM- 13

9/18 (2-0)

MSU.

MSU is going to be a test. They are a balanced team that will be tough. It could go either way. This game is a reflection of how much/how fast the defense picked up its game during camp, and the first two games. I am expecting the offense really start gelling, but I think the defense will be a little behind. Also, this game will be a big test for the team mentally. As I mentioned, I see the first two games be blow outs for the Irish, but ND will meet adversity in East Lansing.I am interested to see how they respond. My gut says ND loses, but my heart says they win in dramatic fashion.

I am a gambler so I'll take ND.

MSU-27

9/25(3-0)

Stanford.

Andrew Luck is going to fade off with the warm weather. Toby Gerhart was a beast, and our defense should be clicking by this point. They won't have an answer for ND's offense.

ND-41

Stanford-17

10/2 (4-0)

Boston College.

God I hate BC with a passion. I want to write that ND will humiliate them and give the school its worst defeat in its pathetic history causing boosters to cut off their contributions, and forfeit its football program. Unfortunately, BC is a balanced and dangerous team. ND got manhandled in Chestnut Hill 2 years ago, and barely got by last year. Charlie Weis is gone, otherwise this would be a L. I think the Irish are confident, and tenacious at this point. Its a close game, and, unlike previous years, ND gets strong in the 4th quarter pulling away comfortably.

ND 34

BC 24

10/9 (5-0)

Pitt

Pitt is the toughest game to date. They are all around solid, and talented. It's a toss up, and will be a HUGE game. Pitt will upset Miami, and be around 10 in the polls. ND will probably be around 17-20. This game will for sure be a battle, and I will not argue with anyone who tells me that ND should not be favored in this game. I am not sure ND will be ready for this game yet. They will be overachieving if they win this game.

Pitt-30

ND-27

(5-1 for the first six games)
