Auburns 2004 Championship Is Lost In The Fog
Lost in the fog. That is what is Auburn’s 2004 championship award is, only the “fog” is the BCS smoke and mirrors. By virtue of the NCAA sanctions against USC and having the title National Champion stricken from the record, the BCS has created a fog of sorts for the non cheaters of the sport by not awarding the title to Auburn. The BCS operates in a cloud of smoke and mirrors used to give the illusion of a clear National Champion but each year the computers and polls seem to generate a BCS bowl game that does not have the best teams playing against each other. The National Championship game of 2004 was a clear case of this, pitting USC against a hapless Oklahoma team, while Auburn undefeated in the SEC played Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl. USC, the darlings of the BSC with the Southern California glamour and the blue collar team from Alabama. The other team from the state of Alabama. Auburn demolished everyone in their wake that year with a juggernaut offense that boasted three first round NFL picks. Although the annual rivalry game against Alabama began slowly for the Tigers, Alabama was no match for an Auburn team that awaited destiny. Auburn won their bowl game over a solid Virginia Tech team in stellar fashion, and then they waited. And as of August 2010 they are still waiting. The muddling fashion which the BCS has created by not awarding the championship trophy is an abomination. The havoc this creates underscores the need for a backup plan. After cheating ran rampant throughout the Olympics, the IOC created a system to dethrone the cheater and award the next in line. At what point in this discussion of the 2004 BCS National Championship do we have to reach in order to resolve this? USC has admitted wrong doing and the BCS trophy is packed and ready for shipping. By not awarding this to Auburn the BCS will solidify their smoke and mirrors system of awarding a championship much like the Wizard had everyone fooled in Oz. Let’s throw back the curtain and reveal what we’ve known all along, Auburn was the second best who now deserves this Championship. To not make a determination in the matter shows the BCS will continue to blow smoke and huff and puff but the reality is there is nothing there.
