2010 College Football: 10 Coaches Who Could Replace Rich Rodriguez

RM HeroldAug 5, 2010

With the NCAA alleging that Rich Rodriguez's West Virginia teams were guilty of violations, he is once again in hot water.

Being that he hasn't had a winning record at Michigan yet, if these allegations blow up and he still doesn't produce a winning season, it's curtains.

He still has a chance to keep his job. All he has to do is win big.

The problem is, Ohio State, Iowa and Penn State are still in the conference.

I hate to dance on the man's grave since he's still there, but...

10. Desmond Howard

1 of 10

Former Michigan Heisman trophy winner and now a college football analyst at ESPN. He's definitely a Michigan man, would be high profile and seems to know what he is talking about.

Get him some solid assistant coaches and get him in there.

9: Les Miles

2 of 10

He has Michigan ties—he played under Bo Schembechler in the '70's and coached there twice in the '80's.

If he is tired of facing that grueling SEC schedule every year, he could move north.

I would have moved him higher up but I don't think he's leaving the Bayou—unless it's by force.

8. Paul Johnson

3 of 10

I'm not sure how the triple option would do in Ann Arbor, but I know Wolverines fans have always appreciated a good running game.

Johnson might see leaving Georgia Tech for UM as an upgrade. Give him a call.

7. Pete Carroll

4 of 10

By midway through this season, Pete is going to realize he would rather be back on campus.

The Seahawks will tune him out after a tough loss and he can't threaten to revoke scholarships.

It never hurts to ask.

6. Tyrone Willingham

5 of 10

He won at Stanford. And he was National Coach of the Year in 2002.

He may have gotten a raw deal at Notre Dame.

Maybe he could resurrect his career while doing the same for Michigan.

College coaches usually get recycled anyway, right?

5. Lloyd Carr

6 of 10

Lloyd Carr was among the most winningest active football coaches in FBS.

Michigan won or shared five Big Ten titles under Carr and his1997 team was named the AP's National Champion.

Here's a little more:

Carr was 5–4 against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, 10–3 against Michigan State and had a 9–2 record against Penn State.

He was fired for not beating Ohio State?

Really?

I know he's retired from coaching, but if they apologized and asked him nicely enough...?

4. Chris Petersen

7 of 10

The guy keeps winning on blue turf, imagine what he could do in the Big Ten?

Boise State is moving from the WAC to the Mountain West—a step up in conference strength—but the Big Ten is a giant leap for Chris Petersen if he took the job in Ann Arbor.

Get that man to the Big Time.

3. Greg Schiano

8 of 10

He is on everybody's hot list. But Rutgers would like you to stop talking about him. He is a rah rah guy so he might snap those Wolverines into shape.

I think they could get him, but what do I know?

2: Jim Harbaugh

9 of 10

Jim Harbaugh came into the Pac-10 and went right for Pete Carroll's jugular.

In Harbaugh's first year, he stated that Carroll was in his last year at USC and that Carroll was bolting to the NFL. OK, Harbaugh was off by a few years, but still, he got under Carroll's skin. He also beat USC two out of three years.

If Harbaugh, a Michigan man, says he wants the Michigan job, it's his.

Unless those comments about Michigan's academics come back to haunt him.

1. Mike Leach

10 of 10

The guy is a winner (10 straight winning seasons) and has won Coach of the Year Awards.

Yes, he is controversial, but that didn't stop Michigan from hiring Rich Rodriguez.

Leach is No. 1 on this list because he will win immediately and Michigan can get him tomorrow.
