College Football:The Highlights from Monday's Madness

David ThurmanAug 3, 2010

After a few weeks of little news or updates, Monday overloaded us Buckeye fans with tons of data. Between bad reporting, the Big Ten media day, and Jim Tressel's press conference, there is a lot for us to stay on top of.
So let's look at what we learned.

We learned the impact of messy reporting

NBC4 reported a story that Nathan Williams and Storm Klein were being charged with assault after an incident at a party Sunday morning. Fans instantly assumed the worst (including me), and it appeared this could have some major ramifications on the season. As the day progressed though, several other sources found out that neither guy was mentioned in the police report and were not being charged. Then later, NBC4 pulled their story.

Obviously, this is great news for the Buckeyes. It will be interesting to find out the facts of what happened in the coming days though.

We learned that the media still has high expectations for Pryor

For the second year in a row, the media voted Terrelle Pryor the Big Ten's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. My dad shared his sentiments on the subject this morning , and he feels like John Clay will be the conference's best player. It's hard to argue after Clay's dominance a year ago.

Regardless of who we think is the best player in the Big Ten, it's important to realize the massive expectations Pryor faces yet again this season. He will not only be the face of the Buckeyes in 2010, he will be the face of the entire conference. Even after a inconsistent season in 2009, his Rose Bowl performance has risen the bar on what is anticipated from him week in and week out.

We learned Kirk Herbstreit does have wisdom in his negativity

Speaking of Pryor's consistency, Kirk Herbstreit had some tough questions to ask about Pryor this morning on SportsCenter. Now, many have written off Herbstreit's words about Ohio State as complete heresy, but at times he does offer a perspective that no one else in Columbus does.
This morning, he reminded viewers to realize how inconsistent Pryor has been, and that one great performance in the Rose Bowl doesn't mean that he will do that every week. I couldn't agree more and have said the same thing many times on this blog. I do expect Pryor's game to go to another level, but want to wait until a few games into the season to see how he has progressed before expecting him to lead this team to another championship.
We learned about some positive eligibility news

Some of the biggest rumors of the summer have surrounded the eligibility of Marcus Hall and incoming freshman Roderick Smith.
According to Tressel, Smith is finishing up some summer-school and should be find academically. It sounds like he might not be ready right at the beginning of camp, but will join the team during preseason camp when his paperwork goes through. Also, Tressel made it clear that he expects Hall to be fine, which is big news considering the lack of depth at the tackle spots.

We learned that left tackle is still a question mark

Just when it looked like we could pencil in Mike Adams at left tackle, Tressel dropped the bomb in his press conference that it is still an open competition. Not only will Andrew Miller continue to get reps at LT, but Marcus Hall and J.B. Shugarts will also get a try.
That's not exactly the most positive news going into the fall. Adams has apparently not been able to prove enough to lock down the position, which is evident by the fact that Andrew Miller is still in the conversation.
Miller struggled mightily in the spring game and has a fraction of the physical ability Adams does. So let's hope Adams can pull things together in fall practice, because he is such an important piece to a championship run.

We learned more details about the Big Ten expansion

With the Big Ten adding Nebraska, there are a lot of questions surrounding the expansion of the conference. Here were the highlights of what Jim Delany had to say .

- The Big Ten will continue to keep the name "Big Ten."
- The conference will be split into two six-team divisions, and the details of what that will look like will be released in the next several months.
- Delany made it clear that there are no current plans to add more teams, but it could eventually happen.
- A site for the Big Ten Championship Game is still being looked at. The conference may pick a site for the first year and then later pick a more permanent home.
- Delany doesn't see Notre Dame ever jumping on board with the Big Ten.
