2010 College Football Predictions: Next Season's Best Home Field Bets

Barking CarnivalJul 31, 2010

With the College Football season getting closer, it is time to start preparing for the upcoming season as a winning bettor.

Sure that means raiding the team blogs, various preview magazines and so forth. It also means preparing what it takes to make money betting on these athletes.

While taking a break from reading up on each team and analyzing their previous season, I think it is important to revisit Home Field Advantage each year around this time.

Home Field Advantage (HFA) is one of the major differences between betting on college football compared to professional football. In professional football the HFA is fairly standard.

This simply is not the case in college football. There are large discrepencies between a game played here in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium and a game played in Hawaii at Aloha Stadium. From crowd noise, to playing surface, to opponent travel to overall atmosphere, different stadiums offer different levels of advantage for their home program.

Over the years, I have developed a running average on these programs (Save Western Kentucky whose number I provide here I would take with a grain of salt) respective HFA and apply the number accordingly when I handicap a college football game.

As a result of the methodology, there is rarely a huge upward or downward movement in HFA from one year to the next so there are times when drastic change occurs that these numbers could be slower to adjustment than they might be otherwise.

Here are my Home field advantage numbers for 2010. Feel free to disagree, agree, enlighten or inform in regards to them. I stand by them as very solid and effective, because their accuracy is one of the determining factors on whether or not I eat, pay the mortgage, or enjoy a cold one at my favorite Book.

“But Vegas Kyle Drinks are free in the casinos.”

Not if you’re losing they’re not.

Enjoy, and as always thoughts are appreciated.
