Money Available, but No New Signings: Is Wenger Uncertain or Undecided?

Mohamed Eldin MasriJul 27, 2010

Since the beginning of the current transfer window, Arsenal have made two new signings in the shape of Chamackh and Koscielny. They might be only two signings, but are of great significance to the squad, especially with the lack of players in the back, Koscielny will be useful, and his understanding with Vermaelen might decide Arsenal's faith.

This wouldn't be the first time Arsenal's season ends because of a lack of understanding at the back, Gallas, Toure and Silvestre were like clowns at a circus at times, and even at the end of last season Vermaelen was found guilty of sometimes getting caught of guard, these errors have proved costly for Arsenal over the past few years.

With little over a month left in the current transfer window, Wenger is yet to sign new players, and when you put in to consideration the fact that Wenger has only paid the price of Koscielny (9.7 million pounds), it would seem that Arsenal still have plenty of money left to spend (Around 20 million to be exact).

So, why hasn't Arsene Wenger signed any new players yet? And with the probability that Fabregas will be sold to Barcelona, Arsenal will have even more money available, yet not many players are being linked to Arsenal.

While it's not in the nature of Wenger to pay mad money on new signings, and nor should it be, fans must understand that what ever name Wenger might buy, the probability is that this name is either and up and comer. Or someone completely unknown and off the radar.

It's not a habit of being cheap or Wenger being senile, but rather Wenger's experience proving beneficial to the club he manages. Mourinho has won many titles with Chelsea, only to leave the club with serious debts, so has Alex Ferguson, all those transfers have proved costly in the long run.

Suffice it to say, Wenger and Arsenal aren't Barcelona, Madrid or Manchester City.

Wenger is probably pondering what his next move in the transfer market will be, it's not every day you find a Thomas Vermaelen, Wenger has pontificated that he will not splash the cash unless the player is worth it.

With that said, Wenger is a master economist, to him no player will ever be worth more than 15 to 20 million, he will not buy a player for over that price unless something extreme occurs.

The players Wenger needs to buy are a goalkeeper, a defender, and a holding midfielder. So far, the only thing Arsenal fans have been getting are the endless rumors of many goalkeepers being linked with the club.

Arsenal were linked with Mark Schwarzer, the Australian was linked with a goalkeeping and coaching role. This would seem as a very bad move for Arsenal, and while the fans will state that it's important to nurture the talents of Fabianski and Mannone, one has to swiftly counter these comments by stating that Fabianski barely has talents to make it as an Arsenal goalkeeper.

He is so bad at times he makes Almunia look good, selling him along with Almunia would be the best course of action.

Arsenal have finally been linked with Maarten Stekelnburg, the Ajax goalkeeper was phenomenal for Holland during the World Cup, and is one of the very main reasons Holland made it to the final, and he also is said to be worth four million pounds, if Arsenal don't move for him quickly, they might live to regret it.

Especially with Manchester United looking for a replacement for Van der Sar.

Stekelnburg as the first team goalkeeper, coupled with Mannone as his back-up seems like a perfect fit.

When it comes to defenders, Wenger stated that Campbell might renew his contract, and has shown faith in Nordveit ever since he came back from loan. Wenger still needs to buy one more defender, and one more holding midfielder, seeing how Song is the only one in the team, Wenger has placed Diaby or Fabregas in place of Song whenever he got injured. Needless to say that didn't go to well.

Arsenal need to act quickly, it's a dog-eat-dog world in the transfer market, and Wenger's sagaciousness will prove to be of the utmost importance, coupled with his ability to spot talents, Wenger still has work to do in the transfer market.

Only time will tell if Arsene Wenger is planning to buy new players or not. And with only a month left in the transfer window, fans can be certain that the answers will be available very soon.
