Bright Future In Chicago

Paul RaymondJul 21, 2010

While the Chicago Cubs try to figure out who will follow Lou Piniella as manager, the cities NBA team received some great news. In an interview with ESPN Chicago’s Nick Friedell, star point guard Derrick Rose said he’ll never, ever leave his hometown team.

"

You’re never leaving Chicago, are you?

DR: I’m never [leaving] … never.

"

I’m sure the city of Chicago let out a collective sigh of relief after hearing this statement, you know after how LeBron James treated his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. Now to be real it is all just talk but we’ll see how true Mr. Rose is to his word when it comes time for free agency.

Unlike James, Rose sounds sincere when talking about his hometown Bulls, which leads me to believe that his statement could ring true.

"

Winning an NBA title in Chicago or winning a gold medal in the Olympics if you were to make the team — which one would you rather have?

DR: (Laughs) Oh man. Are you serious? At home. I would have to say at home. We’ve been waiting for it for a long time, and that’s something that the city would never forget, and that’s my hometown.

"

The Bulls have a star point guard to build around and the kid is only going to get better. In his two seasons, he’s averaged 18.7 points, 6.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds a game. Those are numbers that should only increase with experience and better talent around him.

While some of us may think Rose needs some more supporting pieces, he doesn’t think so. Friedell asked him if he’d be recruiting players during the World Championships.

"

I know you’re not big on recruiting, but have you mentioned to any of these guys that Chicago may be a good fit down the line?

DR: Oh, I told you man, just give me a couple … No, no, no. We’re good right now. Forget that. We’re straight right now with the team that we have. Probably later on, 10 or something years from now down the line, but right now we’re fine the way we are right now.

"

Personally, I hope he does stay. For how much I hate and I do mean HATE the Chicago Bulls, the NBA is much better when they’re playing well. Ya, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers have kept things exciting but it’s a better league when all the dynasty type franchises are playing well.
