New York Rangers Report: Offseason Still Far From Over

Nick PerriJul 21, 2010

In an interview Monday Rangers GM Glen Sather let Rangers fans know that he isn’t done trying to make this team better for next season.

“Through training camp, and then once you get into the start of the season, you don’t want to fool around too much with the roster,” Sather said on Monday. “However, in the meantime, it’s a constant effort to make the team better and improve it. There’s a lot we go through during the summer. There’s a lot of work involved. And we are not done considering things.”

So what’s Sathers next move?

Perhaps signing a winger/center to play with Gaby on the first line? Maybe he’ll trade or waive players to open up cap/roster space. All we know is that Sather is still up to something, and big names in free agency (Frolov, Selanne, Stempniak, Ponikarovsky, etc.) will get more attention, and ultimately be signed. The Rangers are in talks with Frolov, who is expected to sign sometime this week, and in a recent blog on www.hockeybuzz.com, the Rangers are in a race with the Kings for an unnamed top-six forward. It’s evident that Sather is after another scorer to help Gaborik, but besides that, what else is he trying to do?

“Obviously we want to get Marc Staal signed,” said Sather. “If someone comes along and gives him an offer sheet, which is always possible, we’ll match it. But we are going to keep negotiating with him.”

Not only is he trying to sign another forward, but he is in continuous talks with RFA Marc Staal. Whatever the next move is, it will definitely be a helpful one (Sather can’t afford another mistake).
