Why the Kentucky Wildcats Will Never Win a Title With 'One and Dones'

Collin O'ConnorJul 20, 2010

Everyone has their opinions on John Calipari.

Whether you think you think he's doing the right thing or wrong, you can't argue with all the wins and recent success he's had. However, there is one thing missing from his trophy case: a National Championship.

After having one of the most talented teams last season, Calipari failed to win it all again, losing to West Virginia in the Elite Eight.

Sure, you can have an undefeated regular season or win thirty games, but when it comes down to it, your name doesn't go into the record books until you win the championship.

So, can Calipari ever do it if he keeps the same recruiting strategy and loses his starters every single season?

For one thing, he is always going to have a top point guard. From Derrick Rose, to Tyreke Evans, to John Wall, and now Brandon Knight, it's becoming sort of a tradition for Calipari to grab a top point guard in each class.

But is that necessarily a good thing?

Looking back at the season that was, the freshmen seemed to be immature at times.

If one thing is for certain, it takes a team to win a national title. The last team I can remember winning a title with a "one and done" player as their best player was Syracuse, when they had Carmelo Anthony. However, that team still put veteran and mature talent around him.

Kentucky won't have that type of experienced maturity.

To put it in perspective, Kentucky averaged 13.5 turnovers a game in the NCAA Tournament, Butler averaged 9.8.

The statistic shows the maturity Butler had over Kentucky, especially in close games and down the stretch.

Could that be why the Bulldogs made it all the way to the Final Four and the Wildcats were at home watching?

Possibly.

However, there is one thing is certain, the leadership and the way that Butler fought back after being down, and fighting through adversity, I never saw from Kentucky in the postseason.

The difference between experience and immaturity in college basketball is how the team reacts when something goes wrong. If you're down 12 at halftime, how do your leaders respond? Who steps up in the locker room?

It can't be the coach. Someone on the floor has to be a veteran and has to know how to get the team through it and win.

Great teams find a way to win no matter what. I'm not so sure that a freshman lead team can ever become one of the best teams in the country.
