TTUberville: Tommy Tuberville Could Be Texas Tech's 'Saving Grace'
A lot of coaches have something to prove this college football season, but Tommy Tuberville has a mountain to climb. Since taking over the Red Raiders Jan. 19 after the firing of Mike Leach, change, change and more change has been the story of out Lubbock. I was/still am a fan of Mike Leach and his high-powered air raid offense, and believe he completely changed the face of the Tech football program. He made believers out of a lot people and to accomplish this in West Texas is a fete in itself. But those of you who know anything about West Texas, he wasnt really what they would call a "good fit". He definitely had a different style then what the people there are used too. The choice of Tommy Tuberville as their new head coach is more their speed. And after reading up on Coach "Tubs" I am agreeing on this more and more.
We know the guy can coach. He led Auburn to a perfect season back in 2004. He has won several Coach of the Year awards including the Bear Bryant Award, Walter Camp C.O.Y., and SEC Coach of the Year twice. His coaching abilities are not in question here. A suit and tie type of guy, he will fit in fine with Kent Hance and Gerald Myers. But his players are going from one extreme to another. They were used to walking into a head coaches office filled with pirates, swords, and autographed pictures of Donald Trump. I don't really see Tubs having a skull and cross-bones flag up in his office. I do see him as a coach though that is there to COACH. He is a no-nonsense type of guy and that is exactly what Texas Tech needs now. With Tech being known for their offense, Coach Tubs has promised to produce like Leach did. Bring in the change. He brought in Troy Offensive Coordinator Neal Brown, who has implemented more of a running game to the Tech offense which already includes a fantastic air game. Tuberville is known as "defense" guy and many questions have come up as to if he can keep the Red Raiders offensive game high-powered. I think he is going in the right direction.Bring in the change again, Tuberville brought over another one of his SEC pals, James Willis to be the new Defensive Coordinator. Willis was the linebackers coach for Alabama last year. So the potential for Texas Tech is there and seems to be getting more prominent as we get closer to season kickoff. I am looking forward to seeing this "new" team in action and it could possibly be the Tech of 2008 we all remember and love. All we do now is wait. And make sure we keep Craig James away from Coach Tuberville.
