Rangers Prospect Preview: Who Else Is in the New York Organization?

Nick PerriJul 19, 2010

You may or may not know that over the past three days I’ve previewed the Rangers top prospects of each position. I chose a top 5 offense, defense, and I chose a top 3 goalies. There are no more positions to preview, so I will make a   top 5 prospect list of players that I left out. The players will be from various positions, and as I’ve done the past three days I will give a small preview of the player. As I’ve said before, I understand that you may disagree with my decisions. If you do, than leave a response below and I will get back to you. He I go…

5. C-Ryan Bourque: the 5’9” 175 pound center was taken 80th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2009 NHL entry draft. The son of legend Ray Bourque had a very solid season for the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. In 44 games he tallied 19 goals and 24 assists, with 20 penalty minutes. Not too bad. He could still use another few season’s in the minor leagues. But I would expect to see him becoming a real competitor in training camp in about 3-4 years.

4. C-Roman Horak: Horak was selected 127th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2009 NHL entry draft. The talented center had a very good year in the WHL for the Chilliwack Bruins. Scoring a total of 21 goals, 27 assists, and 39 penalty minutes in 66 games, he gave Chilliwack a very good season. Another player who could use another few season in the minor leagues, he is already a skilled center and will only get better.

3. RW-Christian Thomas: Thomas was selected 40th overall by the Rangers in this year’s entry draft, and completely impressed everyone at the Rangers prospect camp. The Toronto, Ontario native had an outstanding season for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL. The 5’9” 162 pound winger totaled 41 goals and 25 assists, in 64 games. The extremely speedy right winger will probably spend 1-2 seasons in the AHL (or another minor league) before becoming a New York Ranger. He may also look at building a bigger frame, as he only weighs 162 pounds.

2. D-Pavel Valentenko: This Russian defenseman could’ve easily had a spot in my top 5 d-men. Instead of him I chose Lee Baldwin. Valentenko has spent the previous two seasons in the KHL for Moscow Dynamo. In 15 games he totaled 1 assist and 10 penalty minutes. Valentenko, who was taken 139th overall by the Habs in the 2006 NHL entry draft, should put up a good fight to make the NHL this season. I don’t expect to see him playing in the NHL this season, but I do hope to see him on the blue line by the 2012-2013 season.

1. RW-Dale Weise: Weise, who was selected 111 by the Rangers in the 2008 NHL entry draft, has spent the last two seasons in the AHL playing for Hartford. In 147 games for the Wolf Pack, Weise has tallied 29 goals (28 last season), 34 assists (22 last season), and 178 penalty minutes (114 last season).Weise will be a favorite to make the team this season, but if he is unsuccessful I would expect to see him called up for a brief stint sometime during this upcoming season.

There it is 5 other players who could’ve made their respective top 5 lists. Again, if you disagree with the players I chose, leave a response below and I will get back to you. Anyway, thanks for the read and I hope you enjoyed.
