Triple the Fun: Chris Paul's Alleged Trio Vs The Miami Heat Trio

Matt RavidaJul 14, 2010

The Fun in the Sun started a week ago today, when LeBron announced that he, along with Chris Bosh, is going to join Dwyane Wade on the Miami Heat.

Once this occurred, the possibilities of what could come and the doors that the Heat could open with these three guys were through the roof.

On paper, this team seems too electrifying to even stop. Who is going to guard Wade? Who is going to guard LeBron? Who is going to guard Bosh? All you need to do is stick a Mike Miller in the corner, and he will earn every one last penny dropping those treys. Oh yeah, you have a quick point guard in Mario Chalmers who can also put some points on the board.

But recently, while at Carmelo Anthony's wedding, Chris Paul was up on the podium announcing a toast and mentioning how Carmelo and himself should join Amar'e Stoudemire up in New York to create their own triple trouble.

Though, we are not sure if Paul was either joking or being serious. Well, there is and will always be speculation about this new tandem that could be in the making.

In theory, most people would not want this happening because having two teams with three All-Stars like that is not that fun. Fans like to cheer for their favorite player on each different team and see them go head to head in fierce competitions, night in and night out.

Now, that all of those players are on the same team, it will just be you and your friends all going for the same team...no competition.

Then again, who really cares about that aspect of it? We would all love to see the league have two teams with that many All-Stars go at it four times a year. It would be amazing and as intense as an NBA basketball game could get.

With that being said, you would already know which two teams would be at the top of the Eastern Conference, without a question.

Could having these two powerhouse teams be good for basketball? Well if it was going to happen, I guess time would tell. There will always be the pros and cons to having these powerhouse teams.

On to the comparison between the two teams.

The Miami Heat would have the names in LeBron and Wade, whereas Carmelo and Stoudemire are not necessarily as well known or publicized as Wade and LeBron are. The Heat would have the pure scorers in LeBron and Wade, and the good side-kick scorer in Bosh, who can stretch the floor for the Heat. The Knicks would have the more balance of the two teams. Carmelo would be their main scorer, Amar'e would get his points through facilitating from Carmelo and Paul, and lastly, Paul's role would be setting all this up and making it all happen, as well as relieving the scoring off of Carmelo Stoudemire when being doubled-teamed.

So based on that paragraph, you may be able to hint that my favorite tandem, and the tandem that I think would succeed the most, would be the tandem of Paul-Carmelo-Stoudemire. My reasons are as follows...

Who takes the shot during the game?

For the Heat, either player could take the shot, whether it is Wade or LeBron. In a way it can be beneficial because either one is capable of doing so. But, what if one just starts doing it all himself and does not want to pass to anyone else? The you are in a pickle.

Whereas with the Knicks, you main scorer is Carmelo. You know who is going to take the last shot, and who is going to take the important shots, and when Carmelo is getting double-teamed, that leaves the great Chris Paul to step up.

This issue can go either way.

The "Floor General"?

Though the Heat have Wade and LeBron, you need that point guard who can be there for you to lead your team. (I know everyone is just going to say, oh well, look at Rajon Rondo and how he emerged). Well ladies and gentlemen, Rondo did not really emerge into the player he was until his second year with Allen, Pierce, and Garnett. Furthermore, Allen, Pierce, and Garnett are not LeBron, Wade, and Bosh. The Celtics tandem was on the downside of their careers, whereas the Heat tandem is just hitting their prime years.

The Knicks would have their clear-cut floor general, Chris Paul. Paul is one of the best point guards in the game. (The best in my opinion, but that is being biased). Paul is also one of the best point guards in the game because he is able to distinguish what is best for the team, rather than himself. He would rather set up guys for easy baskets, than force the issue himself. Chris is another great point guard at being able to manage the game, especially in close important games.

The clear-cut winner here is the Knicks.

The Intimidation Factor...

The Heat wins this one, hands down. You might be thinking and hearing from NBA players who are saying, "It is just another NBA team." Well, they are just trying to tell themselves that.

They think otherwise, though, when they see a team that has LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, and then add Chris Bosh! Seeing that alone on the roster is enough to intimidate other teams. Who even cares what the rest of your roster looks like!

Supporting Cast

The Heat have only the Big Three, along with Mario Chalmers and Udonis Haslem, under contract. Chalmers is a good point guard, but unless he turns out to be a Rondo, I think they need to sign a more savvy type veteran guard with playoff experience. Haslem is a great power forward, but now with Bosh, are they going to put him at the five? If they don't and they stick him on the bench, he would be a great sixth man, but I do not see it being able to capitalize on his skill-set.

The Knicks will have a bit more players than the Heat under contract. The Knicks would have the tandem of Paul, Anthony, and Stoudemire, as well as Ronny Turiaf, Raymond Felton, Kelanna Azubuike, Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Toney Douglas, Anthony Randolph, and Bill Walker.

So clearly, the bench factor goes to the Knicks.

The Next Zen Master?

I know this is a very, very far stretch to the great Phil Jackson and what he has accomplished, but with that being said, there are some pretty good coaches in the mix.

The Heat coaching position is tricky. The Big Three are saying Erik Spoelstra will be the coach, whereas the media is saying the man who put this together, Pat Riley, might be returning to his coaching duties.

The Knicks have the man who brought us, and perfected the run-and-gun type offense. He has the perfect team to do it. He has Paul running the show, and with his lighting quick speed to get ahead of everyone, that will be a bonus. Then, he has a big guy like Amar'e, who ran this offense with D'Antoni in Phoenix, as well as having Carmelo on the wing to push the ball up ahead to.

This offense could be the best fit for these three players, and then you can count on Gallinari to sit in the corner and hit the open threes when everyone is focusing on Paul, Anthony, or Stoudemire.

This goes to the Knicks, unless Pat Riley becomes coach...then it would be a toss-up between the two.

With all that being said, if I had to choose the better team, it would have to be the New York Knicks in this situation. They have the most balanced star power that you could possibly have, while the Miami Heat just have the stars who are too similar to one another.

This new so called tandem in New York would most likely happen, and it would be the best decision that either Paul or Anthony would make, since they both know they are not going to win by themselves and with the respected teams they are on now.
