David Wilson's Article Cites Warren Wells as a Prototype Wide Receiver

Honor Warren Wells TheTorchJul 12, 2010

Touching the lives of others has been a part of my career for more than 40 years. The idea of contributing to the lives of others was taught to me at home and at Texas Southern University. As a member of the Raider Nation I sometimes take time out to visit with a senior former Oakland Raider whose love for the game and for the Oakland Raiders has not faded away.

One of the Bleacher writers for whom I have a lot of respect made reference to a classification of Warren Wells as a prototype wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders. It seems he also was one of Al Davis's top choices to enter the game when things would get tight and tough.

Wells delivered, catching balls almost perfectly with those hands that took the wear and tear of the impact of an NFL football.

Since many of the balls that Wells embraced with those hands were thrown by the "Mad Bomber" Daryl Lamonica you can bet that Wells' hands were both flexible and strong to grasp the football and grab more points for the Oakland Raiders.

Now as we anticipate the 2010 season, we hope that the Oakland Raiders can develop some wide receivers who can attain yards per reception averages like those of Wells and some of the other wide receivers in Wilson's list.

Whenever I am successful to get those short visits in a park in a southeast Texas town, I always ask Wells what he has read. On a recent visit and interview he indicated that he was studying Matthew, Chapter 7.

I pulled out my Bible and looked it up and this is what I saw from the man who was a great NFL wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders:

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."

The wisdom in those words can be applied to what many of us desire for the 2010 season. It sounds like we need to ask, seek, and knock.

And my question to a very diverse readership is:

To whom do you pose you question and ask?

To what do you use you energies and seek?

To what place or door of opportunity do you knock and seek entrance?

The answers may vary and we can learn from every answer. As a member of the Raider Nation, I simply ask for young wide receivers who can give us what guys like Wells gave the Oakland Raiders on the playing field.

In my pursuit of sound data and research on the NFL and the Oakland Raiders, I have asked for good reporting on the contributions and history of many of the senior players who do not get much press.

I must compliment David Wilson for his list of the top wide receivers. His ranks were outstanding. Thank you, David.

Wilson who knows a lot about professional football and the Oakland Raiders answered my question and gave us an excellent list and rankings. Wilson included Wells.

So, on this day, I shared Wilson's article with Wells, and Wells' smiled. It is not easy to get a smile from his face which shows lines, indicating that he thinks hard and deep about his career and his life.

One thing I say to Mr. Wells is that many of us appreciate his contributions to the Oakland Raiders, to the AFL and to the NFL. His fantastic feats on the playing field will not be forgotten by outstanding and accomplished researchers and writers such as David Wilson and others.

Thanks, too, to you Mr. Warren Wells for the contributions your generation of players made to the Oakland Raiders.

Go Raiders! Catch that ball and make those touchdowns!
