The SEC Is Never Boring, Not Even in the Off Season. Some Wish It Were.

Larry BurtonJul 11, 2010

What an off season for all of college football. The USC Slamming, all the conference re-alignment talk and the usual recruiting buzz that goes with visits and camps.

The SEC is no different and there's been lots of buzz since the final whistle blew last season and maybe it's time to look over it all and what may still come down.

1. The Meyer meltdown - Is he, isn't he? Who the heck knows? Apparently Florida ended up needing an interim coach like I need a lead bathing suit. Most of us still don't know exactly what happened with all that commotion and apparently won't ever since according to Meyer, he's at the controls like always, so expect Florida to win the East again and face Alabama yet again.

2. SEC expansion - Only the talk has died down, the maneuvering is still taking place behind the scenes.

3. Lane and the midnight train out of Knoxville - Despite having his picture officially placed beside the word OVERRATED in the dictionary, Tennessee fans were willing to stick with him until he took the Lane train with daddy and Ed Ogremouth back to USC.

He got there just in time to jump in the frying pan and feel the heat from years of probation and scholarship reductions. Suddenly his dream job became more of a nightmare. Talk about karma.....

4. The debauched drunk director and the not so strict Richt at Georgia - While Richt's seat may be getting hotter, Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evan's simply exploded out from under him.

Pulled over DUI with a 28 year old sitting pantyless in your car and the panty's between HIS legs, neither the officer nor Evan's wife is sure to believe his story of "Nothing going on here"...

That picture at the press conference sure makes him look like a guy that's been with a wife who's been yelling at him all night.

In the ultimate off season dumbass move of the year, Evans was fired from a half a million dollar a year job with a five year contract extension and a raise that was set to go into place that week. He should have found a better way to celebrate. Perhaps by staying between the hedges and not in the bush.

As for Richt, he's just one more eight and four from the door himself.

5. Rocky knocks prove it's not the man in charge, there's just dumb players at UT - You had to vote UT players into main character roles for the television show, "American's Dumbest Criminals", when they hold up people in their Tennessee team gear, but to have another seven to ten players get in a bar fight that sent a policeman to the hospital?

Wow, they may need to have the drinking water up there checked for lead.

At least Dooley hadn't just finished a speech where he was bragging that none of his players had been in trouble.

6. Nick Saban continues the recruiting rampage - Lots of SEC schools have good recruiting years. After all, the SEC is prime hunting ground and there's lots to go around, but Nick Saban continues to recruit at a pace that keeps the SEC officials as busy as the NASCAR officials to try and keep one team from simply running away from the others.

The "Saban" rule changes has hardly slowed him down and he's set to pull in yet another top three class if not the very top in the nation.

Alabama may have redefined the word reload when it comes to replacing seniors.

So with lots of off season still to go, who knows what can happen in the SEC.
