The Real Truth: Talent Is Dear, Team Is Worth More and Resolve The Most

Cliff PotterJul 10, 2010

You cannot win without talent.  That mainstay has been preached time and again.  And with good reason.  Talent drives teams to victory.  And talent is hard to come by.

But talent alone does not win games.  The mesh of a team and the artistry of the coach is what wins games.

LeBron James is but one of many examples where talent is great but the future is very uncertain.  There is no doubt but that James got an upgrade in his team, at least with the first three.  But where it goes is very uncertain.

The model of talent versus team could be almost any team upset in a game.  Sure, the talent was there.  But they did not meet their opponents well enough.  Maybe it was karma.  Maybe it was something else.

The problem with talent is that it does not even win.  What wins is resolve.  Mettle.  The ability to meet any situation with poise and agility in sports, and with intelligence.

Drive is a big question with James despite his unbelievable talent.  Time will tell us this as well.

In the end, in all sports, the Boston Celtics in the old days were one of the best examples.  As were Bear Bryant's teams and so many others.  Sure, there was talent.  But there was also the intangible of resolve.

And perhaps the best example of resolve was Larry Bird.  Not blessed with exceptional speed or agility, Bird had drive.

Will James meet the drive even of his own teammates?  Time will tell.
