Best Game Of The World Cup? Germany Beat Uruguay In Bronze Battle

Alex FergusonJul 10, 2010

This World Cup, the Germans have sent a message to the world: Watch Out.

Watch Out! This team is young and very talented.

Watch Out! While the rest of European international football teams will be moving through their primes, this German team will be entering it.

Watch Out! This German team scores a ton of goals, and isn't afraid to attack you.

Watch Out! This team will be good for years to come.

And by coming back from a 2-1 deficit against plucky Uruguay to win 3-2 and take home 3rd place in year that they didn't expect to do anything (frankly, we always expect Germany to be competitive), the Germans showed their mettle.

But this game was an absolute cracker. Both Uruguay and Germany played like they had nothing to lose, and were willing to attack each other constantly for 90 minutes. And thank God for that - we can only hope that Sunday's final will be as good.

It wasn't just Diego Forlan or Bastian Schweinsteiger or Phillipp Lahm or anyone else who shone - for good and bad reasons - everyone played pretty well in a game that was simply fantastic.

Thomas Mueller gave Germany the lead, and Schweinsteiger's mistake let in Edison Cavani, resulting in Uruguay's equalizer. A stunning goal by Diego Forlan (who else?) made it 2-1 to Uruguay, before a hysterically bad Superman impression by the light blues' goalkeeper Fernando Muslera virtually gave Thomas Jansen the chance to nod into an empty net, which he did. More poor Uruguayan defending presented Sami Khedira with the chance, and he nodded home the window.

However, there was still time for a moment. Forlan's sumptuous free-kick in the dying seconds of injury time glanced off the top of the bar, and it was over.

What a game. What a night. What a pair of teams.
