Is David "The Matrix" Krejci a 90 Point Player?

Mickey McGuireJul 10, 2010

In 2010, there were only seven players who put up 90 points. Those players are in order Henrik Sedin (112), Sidney Crosby (109), Alex Ovechkin (109), Nicklas Backstrom (101), Steven Stamkos (95), Martin St. Louis (94) and Brad Richards (91). Is it possible that David Krejci could be one of these players? In 2010, David only managed to put up 52 points in 79 games. However, in 2009, he had a career high 73 points. Krejci has shown the potential to put up big numbers but he has yet to have the perfect season where all the stars align.

For most of the past two seasons, David's linemates have been Michael Ryder and Blake Wheeler. Needless to say, both of these players are inconsistent and shaky at best. Last season, Krejci didn't participate in training camp because he was recovering from offseason surgery and had very little time to create any chemistry with his linemates. The Bruins were also very offensively challenged as a unit and everybody's numbers were terrible. Most players on the team underachieved and somehow the team still made the playoffs.

While the way last season's playoff run ended was embarrassing and disastrous, it gave the Bruins a glimpse into the future. They found out Tuukka Rask has what it takes to be a playoff goalie. They also found out he still has a lot to work on. More importantly however, as far as this article is concerned, they finally found the perfect linemate for David Krejci. That is Milan Lucic.

Lucic is a big body that creates space and has very good hands. The more ice that Krejci has to work with, the more dangerous he is. His vision is arguably the best on the team and among the best in the league. It's as if he sees the game happen before it actually does.

When Claude Julien put Krejci and Lucic on the same line, it was instant magic. Not only were they making noise as a pair, but they helped to rejuvenate Miroslav Satan's career and turn him into "Miro the Hero". With both Lucic and Krejci being healthy going into training camp, coach Julien has a chance to create some chemistry early. He needs to stop putting DK with Wheeler and Ryder. While it worked in 2008, it just doesn't anymore. He has better options with Tyler Seguin and Nathan Horton.

The additions of Tyler Seguin and Nathan Horton make it easier to move Krejci around. Imagine a line of Lucic-Krejci-Seguin. Lucic could be the big body that creates space and adds toughness to the line. Krejci is the playmaker who uses his creativity and Seguin's speed on the right side keeps the defense honest. It would help DK score goals and give him the most dangerous threat he's ever had on the wing.

Unless he gets the minutes, Krejci may never be a 90 point player. With Marc Savard on the trade block, Krejci would immediately become the number one center and probably have Lucic and Horton on his line. However, at this point he is probably the second line center of the Bruins. It is really going to be all about minutes and the cards he's dealt. If he's forced to play with Wheeler and Ryder again, it's just not going to happen. Give him Lucic and Seguin or Horton and this guy without question puts up 90 points. It's finally time for him to step up and become the superstar Bruins fans know he can be.
