NBA Free Agency: LeBron James, Drama Did Not Disappoint

Jason BourneJul 9, 2010

Yes, the 2010 NBA free agency was annoying.

You told everybody it was overrated, and said you didn't care anymore.

But admit it.

You followed the whole thing, and you know it lived up to the hype. And it's not even over yet.

All you saw on SportsCenter, and any other sports channel, for that matter, was LeBron.

When this all started, there was so much hype around it, and we were all certain it would be disappointing in the end.

It was right to think that.

At that time, it looked like everyone just wanted to make start some drama, then return to their teams.

But what happened was the complete opposite: "The South Beach Super Team" was formed.

Did anyone really think this would happen?

Think back to college football realignment.

We all expected the Big 12 to die, and the Big East was supposed to go with it. A few teams moved, sure, but it didn't even come close to expectations; I'm not saying that this won't happen in later years, but there hasn't been talk about it in a while, so we might have to wait another year or so.

The NBA free agency, on the other hand, created one of the greatest trios in NBA history. It's not proven; I know. But you can't deny that they'll be an elite team, immediate titles or not.

Currently, this is all you hear about.

But Carlos Boozer and Amar'e Stoudimire are big names too, even if they are humbled upon the sight of Miami.

This, if possible, changed the league even more than it was expected to.

Just as I am typing this, I'm seeing Cleveland's reaction; fans burning LeBron jerseys; Dan Gilbert criticising him; Miami having a party and all the twittering.

I admit I wanted him to leave. All this hype was forming, and I thought it would disappoint like all the other topics with this much hype around it.

So, as you watch LeBron's interviews for the rest of the summer, remember this: would you rather have all this hype, hear about NBA free agency all summer, but nothing to really happen?

Do you want to hear about how big of a disappointment it was, except all they can talk about IS the disappointment?

No.

Well, maybe Cleveland.
