Actions Speak Louder Than Words: LeBron Chooses Miami

Jerry MurphyJul 8, 2010

LeBron James just proved to me that he wants to win championships. Sure, everyone says they want to win; but they usually are not willing to sacrifice money or ego to do it.

James sacrificed both by choosing the Miami Heat. Yes, he is still going to make a lot of money. But he could have made more by staying in Cleveland (and probably had no chance of winning a championship).

People in his camp told him not to go to Miami because it was Dwyane Wade’s team. It would not be LeBron’s team. He could lose his identity. Are you people for real? Do you seriously think LeBron James will just fade into the background playing for “Dwyane’s Team”?

Not hardly.

LeBron realizes in order for him to win he needs to sacrifice. After all, what did Cleveland do besides try to re-sign him? Nothing (except fire the coach with the highest winning percentage in the team’s history).

Look at the Dream Team of 1992 or the Redeem Team of 2008 (which, by the way, LeBron, Wade and Bosh all played on together). All of those players on those teams sacrificed ego, money, and playing time for the greater good; and look what it got them.

LeBron understands what it takes to win a championship. He always said it was about winning.

In today’s world of narcissistic, egomaniacal athletes who say they want to win but take the big paycheck instead, it is refreshing to see someone actually mean what they say.

We could all take a lesson from LeBron; actions do speak louder than words.

Say what you want Cleveland (and Dan Gilbert), but with your roster I do not see you winning any titles any time soon. Instead of throwing parties and arranging get-togethers to entice LeBron to stay, maybe you should have been arranging a supporting cast.
