The King's Bitter Departure: Why Dan Gilbert Should Shut Up About LeBron James

Chris Dela RosaJul 8, 2010

Quotes like "You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal" are followed by:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE," in Dan Gilbert's letter to Cavaliers fans all over the nation.

There is no question that there was a sense of disappointment when LeBron James announced that he was going to sign with the Miami Heat, but at the same time there is such a thing as going too far.

Gilbert and the Cleveland organization had seven years to build around LeBron James. Although in the final season he had players like Shaquille O'Neal and Mo Williams, LeBron just need that one more "X-Factor".  Everybody saw it, but the organization should've done something about by getting a younger and more reliable player like Shaq who is past his prime.

While we do not know what went on in the meetings between LeBron and the different teams he was interested in (i.e. Knicks, Nets, Heat , Cavaliers, Bulls) it seems that Cleveland did not make much of an effort.  What Cleveland should have done was go after a player like Carmelo Anthony and put him in an situation where he could pair with LeBron in Cleveland or even Carlos Boozer, since his commitment came after LeBron's meeting with the Cavs'.

Either way, you can't blame LeBron.  I am sorry for all Cavaliers fans but at the same time, the Cleveland organization did present a situation where LeBron could win a championship in the near future, while the Heat gave him a once in a lifetime offer that practically guaranteed at least one championship in the next four to five years.

Am looking for reader feedback, please feel free to post a comment.
