Huge Texas Longhorns Football Recruiting Predictions: Greed Is Good

Barking CarnivalJul 6, 2010

Mack Brown has certainly changed the landscape of college football recruiting. Hell, the NCAA is talking about limiting early offers to recruitable athletes until July before they’re seniors.

As fans, instead of reading about leans and commitments in December, we’re talking about closing up shop with one of the greatest recruiting classes in the history of the program…in June.

Brown is the Gordon Gekko of college football recruiting, and although you’ll never hear Brown, a master of diplomacy, extol the virtues of recruiting greed, his actions seem to be doing the talking for him.

If you’re Mack Brown and the University of Texas, greed is evidently very good.

After the recent verbal commitment of Quincy Russell, the Longhorns now sit at 22 commitments for the 2011 class with the Eyes of Texas intently fixed on these final five blue chip prospects: Malcolm Brown, Aaron Green, Jermauria Rasco, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and Anthony Wallace.

Here’s an update to our handicapping percentages from last week based on what we’ve heard since we last spoke. Since Wallace is relatively new to the party, or at least he’s jumped back onto the radar, let’s start with him.

Anthony Wallace

Odds of Committing, Last Week to this Week: 0% to 40%

Arguably the top middle linebacker prospect in the state this year, Wallace’s recruitment has been one of twists and turns. Once thought to be a lock to commit to the Longhorns during his junior year, Wallace resisted Mack Brown’s wiles and instead decided to experience the process by looking around a bit.

Most folks felt Wallace’s ship had literally sailed at that point, but we were recently informed by one of our sources that earlier this year, Will Muschamp decreed that both Steve Edmond and Anthony Wallace would have scholarship offers until signing day or until they committed to another school.

Everyone has seen Edmond’s talent on film, and Wallace is right there as far as talent goes. But there’s more to the story here than just talent. Wallace is a Mack Brown kid, sporting over a 3.5 GPA. His grades also mesh well with the 2011 class, because over half the kids from the Horns' currently committed crop sport 3.0 or better GPA’s.

Throw in the fact that Wallace plays on a Skyline squad with a wealth of talent to place in the pipeline for the foreseeable future, and you can see why Muschamp and staff would hold out hope for his signature regardless of the timetable.

We’re also told that as far and wide as Wallace chooses to look—OU, LSU, or beyond—his heart keeps bringing him back to Texas and specifically Will Muschamp. If Texas has 25 or 26 in the bag by the time Wallace is ready to pull the trigger, Texas will make room, make no mistake about it.

Jermauria Rasco

Odds of Committing, holding steady at 55%

We’re still in a holding pattern for Rasco. In other words, no news is good news for the Horns.

Here’s the deal: Rasco probably knows Les Miles is going to be fired at some point in the next couple years (I wonder who’d tell him that) and L$U doesn’t have quite the pull in Northern Louisiana that they do with the rest of the state, especially with Evangel kids anyway. This has all but pushed him to Texas or perhaps Alabama. LSU is a distant third.

Also, if you’re worried about Rasco’s ability because of his Rivals film, don’t be. There’s other film out there where he acquits his abilities quite nicely. Make no mistake, the Evangel product would rate as the best defensive end prospect in Texas this year.

Aaron Green

Odds of Committing, Last Week to this Week: 45% to 60%

As Tipsy Gypsie reported earlier, our source is becoming more and more optimistic at the thought of Green joining Brown on the 40 acres.

First, don’t discount the effect that Nebraska’s move to the Big Ten has on the young man and his family. The Huskers will play zero games in the state of Texas after this season, and that’s weighed heavily on the minds of the Green family.

Green’s other favorite program, Texas, has a lot going for it. It’s a great school, a great program, and it’s a short one-hour drive up the road from San Antonio. That’s huge.

Also, the Texas coaching staff has done a good job showing how Green would fit into an offense which would feature another great back in Malcolm Brown.

Kick returns, motioning out of the backfield, and reverses are just some of examples the Texas staff has evidently used with Green to illustrate how we’re going to get him touches. It doesn’t hurt that we used tape from two national championship games to show him.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins

Odds of Committing, Last Week to this Week: 90% to 95%

The best tight end prospect in the country is fired up about playing for the Horns in our newfangled power running attack. He’s convinced he can be Bo Scaife to MJ McFarland’s David Thomas (even if the latter is a lofty projection…).

Malcolm Brown

Odds of Committing, Last Week to this Week: 95% to 99%

We’re hearing he’s ready to end the process and may be the next commitment the Horns get. While Dad has had his questions, Momma Brown has been Texas from jump street.

Quincy Russell

We told you last week that Russell was probably going to be the next pickup and indeed he was . One of our guys has seen Russell play basketball and he’s every bit the athlete as any defensive tackle we’ve taken since Shaun Rogers. You know, that 300 lb dude that could dunk a basketball flat-footed.

Now Russell isn’t as good a basketball player as Jackson Jeffcoat, but at least now we can figure that out for a fact. Jesus would love to see some one-on-one tilts between Jackson and Quincy.

I’ll bring Lala and some girls from around the way.
