Fernando Torres To Announce Departure In Club Meeting Next Week

Benjamin LeeJul 5, 2010

Fernando Torres is expected to meet with new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson to announce his wish to depart Anfield this summer.

Torres, who is currently at the World Cup with Spain, has said he will meet with Hodgson after the conclusion of the tournament.

However it has already been reported in several British media outlets that Torres has given the thumbs-up to a move to another English club, with the keenest suitors Chelsea and Manchester City.

City appear slight favourites in the race for his signature and it emerged last week that Torres had recommended the Mancunian club to teammate David Silva, who he has keenly stated in the past that he has wanted to play alongside at club level, along with Argentinian & City star Carlos Tevez. Torres said to the English paper the Daily Mail back in January:

"If I could, I would take David Villa or David Silva to Liverpool as a partner in attack, I wish they could come. It would be a great asset for our team."

"We need match-winners like Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez. We need footballers who break the deadlock in matches. Liverpool is losing the Premier League in home matches against average teams."

Hodgson stated in his press conference upon arriving at Anfield that the decision to keep Torres & Gerrard was "out of my hands" and that “It would be foolish to give guarantees that it’s going to happen because I can’t speak for the players themselves, but I’ll be doing my best to keep them.”

Torres will sit down with Hodgson next week to discuss his future before further discussing moves to either Eastlands or Stamford Bridge at the end of next week. Torres is said to have become disillusioned with life at Anfield, believing that a lack of investment in the club is hampering its progress and he wants the opportunity to win trophies in his career, though long term stability and positive investment in the team are also big criterias for the Spaniard.

Either way, this saga will not be resolved until after the World Cup has concluded.
