Not About The Money? Why Joe Johnson Is Better Off Joining Another Team

Old AccountJul 3, 2010

We are in day three of NBA Free Agency, and the scenarios can not get anymore crazier.

With Lebron, Wade, and Chris Bosh joining possibly every team in the league (kidding of course), what can we expect?

For now, neither of those three are the topic of conversation.

Joe Johnson is the man I have some thoughts on.

On Thursday, Johnson seemed to be staying with the Atlanta Hawks.

Reports said that Johnson would receive a maximum offer from the Atlanta Hawks.

In my opinion, the Hawks are deciding to spend money at the wrong time. Johnson is not a max guy, but a secondary player.

But, I'll talk about that later.

Johnson is saying he will wait and see where the top free agents land, before signing the dotted line.

I am giving Joe some love here.

I know it's hard for me to say anything. If I was offered that much money, it would be hard to pass up.

But if Joe takes a little less, and has a chance of playing for championship, I say go with it.

The Atlanta Hawks are a solid team, but nothing more. They are a team that isn't in the elite of the Eastern Conference, and the way the conference is looking to improve, they will be a middle of the pack team in the near future.

There are quite a few teams that would be great for Joe Johnson, but only if they bring in another star.

His inability to be clutch in the playoffs gives me a few ideas.

Right off the bat, Lebron James. This scenario can happen if he goes to the Nets, or possibly the Knicks.

Speaking of the Knicks, joining Amare Stoudemire in New York, may not be a bad idea. And if he takes a lesser deal that Amare is looking for, than a third option can be brought in.

From a sign and trade possibility, the Dallas Mavericks seem to fit ( in my opinion, the best place for Johnson to land).

Dirk Nowitzki is one of the league's best, but has always come up short in the playoffs.

I don't believe it has anything to do with Dirk not being able to perform at the big stage, but the lack of talent around him.

Bringing in a shooter like Joe Johnson could very well improve the Maverick's success in the post-season.

For now, we don't know where the top stars are going to land.

But it is a good idea that Joe Johnson is keeping all of the options open.

Maybe it isn't all about the money. If he can take less money, and be able to join a team that can contend for an NBA Title next year, more power to him.
