2010 FIFA World Cup: Brazil Crumble In a Robben Raid

Zaakir HoosenJul 2, 2010

Well, he might have not done it by himself, nor did he score a goal, but the trickery and resistance from Arjen Robben has brought Brazil down to its feet in the biggest upset of South Africa 2010.

You might add that the Netherlands are a good enough team, so it's not fair to call it an upset.

But from history and reputation, Brazil ought to at least be in the Semis.

Well that won't happen this year. While many, including myself, hoped and wished for an Argentina-Brazil clash in the final, Brazil have been sent packing from South Africa.

On the other hand, "The Oranje" will be more motivated than ever to overcome their opposition in the semis. This could be Ghana or Uruguay as the match will kick off shortly.

Brazil, who started with so much purpose and drive, looked like they were going to crush the Dutch in no time. Many questioned the Dutch coach's tactics.

With so many praises dished out at the South Americans during the interval, it was the Netherlands who came out more eager and hungry.

It was not long before an error in the Brazilian defense led to the equaliser when Felipe Melo headed in a cross from Wesley Sneijder.

With the score level at 1-1, many would expect calm yet convincing reactions from the five-time world champions. It wasn't to be. Rough challenges and loss of tempers allowed Sneijder to head the second for the Dutch after Kuyt got the initial touch with his head.

At 2-1, and all to do for the Brazilians, a task that looked so impossible especially after Melo made a foolish tackle and stamped on the hamstring of Robben only to see red and the end of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Robben was ringing around the Brazilian defenders, with the likes of Gilberto, Robinho, and Alves all taking out their frustration as he continued to draw fouls.

The match ended 2-1, but Robben was the hero in the third half of the field. His pace and quick feet were the downfall of Brazil.
