NBA Rumors: Rudy Gay in Boston Is a Perfect Fit

Tony SantorsaJul 1, 2010

Who out there on the free agent market could be a good replacement, or a better option, than Ray Allen for the Boston Celtics? Rudy Gay.

Rudy Gay would be a perfect fit for Boston. I realize he's listed as a small forward, but he could also play shooting guard. Gay is currently averaging 17.4 points per game in his very young NBA career. He's only 23 years old and he's a proved scorer. He's a career 45.4 percent field goal shooter while being consistent from downtown by knocking down 34.6 percent of his three's.

Gay would be an interesting fit for the Celtics, yet it'd be a smart and a bold move. He would add youth and athleticism to the "aging" Boston Celtics roster. Gay would also be a perfect option for Rajon Rondo.

Just imagine Rondo and Gay running this team for years to come. These two athletes could run the fast break like no other in the Eastern Conference. They'd be quite the duo.

One the realistic side of this, I doubt this will happen.

Gay is going to be looking for some big money this offseason and I'm not too sure the C's have enough to cough up for him. If Allen chooses to go elsewhere, then that might open up some cap space, along with Rasheed retiring.

The possibly only way Boston could reel in the 6-8, dynamic wing is via a "sign-and-trade" with the Memphis Grizzlies. I'm not too sure who I'd see being involved in this trade, but possibly Tony Allen, Avery Bradley, Luke Harangody, or some future draft picks could be chips in a deal.

This is nothing but a speculation and my opinion, but Gay would be a perfect fit in Boston. I'd love to see him play here.
