Diego Maradona can be very proud of his chicos, especially given Argentina had a tough time qualifying for this year's finals.
Many were critical of Maradona when here left out the experience of the Inter Milan duo: Zanetti and Cambiaso. His strategies and selections have come out trumps this far. All will be tested when the blanco y celeste meet the Germans.
The table is done on the basis that Paraguay only managed a 0-0 draw against Japan (given the tie was decided on penalties).
Of the eight teams remaining:
- only two have won all their games (Argentina and Holland)
- Brazil and Uruguay are yet to lose a game (with their worst results being draws)
- Argentina have scored the most goals with ten
- two teams have conceded just the one goal (Uruguay and Paraguay); both these teams have maintained three blank sheets
- shockingly Paraguay have made the quarter finals having only managed three goals in four games. Two of these goals came in their match against Slovakia, which was probably their best display. They've drawn their last two games 0-0 (against Japan and New Zealand)
- don't expect a goal fest when Paraguay meets Spain. Both nations come into the quarter finals with low goals scored tallies. The two countries have met on three previous occasions. Two of those clashes ended goalless
- Paraguay's record against European nations in World Cup matches is atrocious having only won 2/13 games
- of the five South American teams that qualified for South Africa, only Chile did not make the quarter finals (having lost 3-0 to Brazil in the first knockout round)
- the four previous winners who have made the quarter finals have won the tournament on multiple occasions:Brazil (5 times), Germany (3 times), Argentina (2 times) and Uruguay (2 times)
- Holland final themselves in the final eight with the two teams that have beaten them in a World Cup final: Germany (1974) and Argentina (1978)
- Ghana is the only remaining African representative in this year's tournament (five other African teams participated in this year's World Cup)
- if Ghana beats Uruguay they will become the first African team in history to make the semi-finals of a World Cup
- if Uruguay beats Ghana it will be the first time since 1970 that they've made a World Cup semi-final
- in 1970 Uruguay met Brazil in the semis, a rematch is on the cards if both countries win their quarter finals
- Brazil met Holland in the quarter finals of the 1994 US finals, winning that game 3-2
- in total Brazil and Holland have met three times in the World Cup finals, the Brazilians have won twice (94 and 98) and the Dutch once in 1974
