England vs. Germany World Cup: Fabio Capello Got Tactics Horribly Wrong

Hasmat MustunJun 27, 2010

The most important phase of the World Cup: the knockout stages. Tactics eventually wins you games, but Fabio Capello got everything wrong in this game that saw England get ripped apart by Germany.

Everyone's been crying out for Gerrard to play in behind Rooney. The 4-4-2 formation did not work against USA, definitely not against Algeria and England were OK against Slovenia.

But today's game shows the formation begged for a change, which we never got.

Where did it go wrong?

Where was the natural wingers on the pitch? England had way too many central midfielders, which made the game very compact in midfield. Wright-Phillips and Lennon should have started on both wings, with Gerrard playing in just behind Wayne Rooney.

I said in my previous article that failure to do so will mean Rooney will drop back. He did exactly that, much to every English fan's frustration. England lacked pace on the wings and were not very threatening on the break.

Ozil given too much freedom

Once again, the same name pops up. This guy has to play in the Premier League next season, he is simply world class. A midfield maestro with the ball at his feet; he gave England a torrid time.

I said before that Ozil needs to be kept quiet, but due to England's formation, the German player was able to pick holes in midfield.

Wrong substitutions

Capello should have brought on Crouch at half-time; he is England's plan B but never made it on the pitch.

I thought Heskey on for Defoe was the worst one of the lot. A striker who does not score goals is not going to save your skin when the only thing you really need is your team to score.

Wrong motivation

No one can quite believe these are the same players who play in the Premier League. They were dismal. England looked lost.

John Terry had the worst performance in an England shirt. Wayne Rooney never quite lived up to the 40 goals he scored for his club. Gerrard and Lampard tried but failed to make anything happen.

Capello got it all wrong and it does make you wonder. Something is wrong in the camp and someone has to fix it.

Okay, so the disallowed goal should have gone in, but judging on England's performance, they never deserved to go through.

I think Capello may resign as England boss. He will be targeted by the media and the fans if he does not change the formation. He is a stubborn man but this is not about egos, it is about the nation. He has to go.

This World Cup campaign is worse than Sven's England journey into the World Cup, and the Swede was murdered by the press!

With all that said, Germany were a class above today and played some fantastic football. They showed England how to play counter-attacking football, and Ozil is making the headlines once again.

Another big team out, is there another shock to come form tonight's Argentina vs Mexico game??

From what we've seen so far, anything is possible now.
