final score: honduras 0, switzerland 0. what a boring game. neither of these teams deserved to win the match or even make it to the round of 16 with that poor display.
spain beats chile 2-0. spain wins the group and chile takes the second spot in group h. villa became the first spainard in history to miss a pk in the world cup, but more than made up for it with his brilliant goal. chile become the first south american team to lose in this world cup.
i'm outta here. it's been real. hope you enjoyed my blog more than i enjoyed the match, which isn't saying much. can't wait for the knockout rounds to start tomorrow. i'll be cheering usa on as we seek revenge over ghana for putting us out of the 2006 world cup. l8r.
90+4' - sorry about that. my computer was lagging for the past 15 minutes. can someone please explain to me how bill gates became a billionaire when his products are literally the worst on the market?
not that it matters. these teams were dead in the water at 82' anyhow.
80' - another swiss shot goes wide, and it was an ideal opportunity.
78' - two substitutions, one for each team: shaqiri on, huggel off (switzerand) and welcome on for j.n. palacios
76' - martinez takes a corner for honduras. again, nothing.
74' - frei, of all people, misses the target. the swiss can't seem to find the back of the net today despite a host of opportunities. as it stands right now, they still need two goals and maintain their clean sheet or they'll be going home when this match is over...
...and time is running out.
71' - a quick counter by honduras forces a great save by the swiss keeper, but th corner's wasted.
69' - and on comes switzerland's top scorer, alex frei. nkufo out.
66' - switzerland takes their time setting up the free kick, which is deflected off the wall for a corner. honduras makes a substitution: martinez in, nunez off.
64' - the swiss take a nice shot, but it's right at the keeper, making for an easy save.
60' - honduras fires off a shot but it's saved by benaglio, the swiss keeper.
58' - suazo (honduras is booked for a foul.
56' - the espn commentators for this match are pretty decent. it sounds like a brit and an scottsman. they're both much better than john harkes, who's calling the spain match, definitely the more high profile of the two given the teams and what's at stake. plus, it's on espn (this game's on espn 2). do you suppose that's due to the fact that harkes is an american (and former captain of the us men's national team)?
personally, i prefer accents when watching football. it feels more authentic and they seem to know more about the game. i don't think americans demand americans announcer, but apparently espn thinks they do.
53' - we almost saw a honduran goal, but suazo missed the target. he really shouldn't have though. this game's starting to get a little chippy as well. must be due to the fact that so much is at stake.
51' - chile just scored a goal, bringing the score of that match to 2-1. the swiss are back to needing a two goal victory.
50' - both teams take shots that sail wide of the target.
47' - honduras is the only team in the 2010 world cup that has yet to earn a single point or score a goal.
46' - swiss substitution: yakin in, fernandez out. the second half is under way! yakin will sit behind the strikers in a play maker position.
half time...
btw, iniesta scored another goal in the 37' for spain, who now lead chile 2-0.
they're showing the spain highlights from villa's first goal. chile's goalie should not have come off his line that far. villa calmly puts the ball in an oen goal from 40 yards out. villa is world class.
chile also got a red card, so they're two goals and a man down, which means switzerland now only needs to win by a goal in order to eclipse chile on goal difference, if the current score with chile and spain stands.
in all likelihood, it could get much worse, but switzerland still needs to win the match or they'll be eliminated. personally, I'm hoping for a draw on this one because i desparately need some points in my world cup pool and i picked spain to win, chile to come in second.
45' - another nice swiss delivery and another off side call. one minute of added time. nothing much happens. half time whistle blows. honduras and switzerland tied at 0-0.
43' - beautiful cross to the far post, but the honduran defender pulls the other swiss forward off side.
40' - nice defending by honduras. they clear the ball long and the swiss reset from their own third.
37' - the swiss are without their leading goal scorer as well; he's due to injury.
35' - another free kick, this time for honduras. fernandez, the swiss defender, is booked for a foul. it was a good call because the honduran striker very well might have beaten the keeper to the ball otherwise and it would be 1-0 right now.
bernardez misses the goal by a mile. it was too far out to go for goal anyhow. poor effort.
32' - switzerland earns a free kick they do nothing with. goal kick.
25' - david villa just scored for spain. if that result stands, spain would win the group and chile would finish as runners-up. both of these teams need really need chile to win.
23' - weak shot from distance; easy save by valladares.
20' - honduras have faced 15 european oppents in the past and won only three of those matches, but this is the first time honduras and switzerland have ever met.
17' - perfect ball...the swiss should have finished that header. i think the striker was scared off by possibility of catching a boot to the face. spain and chile still tied at nil-nil.
13' - all of the south american teams are unbeaten in the tournament thus far, which means chile might beat spain. if that happens, la furia roja could be the third big team to take an early exit from the tournament, assuming the swiss win this match, which would give them six points.
9' - not much action so far, but both of these teams need a win, especially honduras.
4' - thomas (honduras) is booked for a rash challenge and concededs a free kick.
2' - switzerland shocked the world last week when they beat spain, with whom they're currently level on points, so they have a better shot of advancing here with a win. honduras needs to win as well but they'll have to score a number of goals on top of it.
1' - and the match is underway!
15 minutes to kickoff...
These are the last two group matches of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa; The Round of 16 kicks off tomorrow. This is how Group H looks right now:
Chile: 6 points, +2 goal differential
Spain: 3 points, +1 goal differential
Switzerland: 3 points, 0 goal differential
Honduras: 0 points, -3 goal differential
This means that all four teams are still alive, which should make for an exciting match.
