2010 NBA Draft Results: Raptors Get a Steal, Take Ed Davis
The Toronto Raptors announced with the 13th pick they will select Ed Davis from North California.
Nothing else happened on draft day, disappointing many. Many expected the Raptors to pull off a big trade dealing Hedo Turkoglu or Jose Calderon, or both, but it didn't happen.
So, what does this mean for the Raptors? Is it another indication that Chris Bosh is leaving, but will this be his replacement? Not necessarily. Bryan Colangelo said that he would take the best player available in the draft, and he certainly did that.
Ed Davis was projected to be gone by the 10th overall pick, but dropped to 13th and the Raptors jumped all over it.
How will this affect the Raptors? Let's look at the different scenarios.
With Chris Bosh
Raptors fans are hoping Chris Bosh will stay, and Ed Davis seems to think that way too. He said Bosh was his favorite player, and seems to be excited to play for Toronto.
With Bosh, Davis would come off the bench and the Raptors would likely play a three man rotation at the big, with Davis, Andrea Bargnani, and Bosh. This would be the best scenario for the Raptors immediately because Davis would be a great defensive stopper off the bench and would provide some toughness.
Without Chris Bosh
If Chris Bosh walks, Ed Davis would likely be the Raptors starting power forward, and would be a crucial building block. This would likely mean the Raptors will need to start rebuilding.
Most Raptors fans wouldn't want to see this, but it might happen.
This would be best for Davis' development, but not necessarily the best for the team.
Overall, the Raptors should be very happy with the pick and I think Bryan Colangelo made a good choice. They got lucky that they got the position to select a top 10 player from the draft from the 13th spot, and Mr. Colangelo capitalized on it.
Welcome to the Raptors, Ed Davis.
