2010 FIFA World Cup: Why the U.S. Will Advance to Round Two from Group C

Kelsey GivensJun 22, 2010

From World Cup Group C, who will advance to the next round? Well, the U.S. of course.

All the U.S. needs to do to advance to the next round is to beat Algeria and have England either tie with or win against Slovenia by no more than one point.

This should not be a problem for the U.S. based on the number of points scored so far in each game and based on their performance in their last game against Slovenia. The last game should have been a win for the U.S., but due to a bad call by a referee, it was a tie that could jeopardize the U.S.’ chance to advance to the next round.

Even with the tie from the last game, the U.S. should have no problem winning against Algeria.

So far in the World Cup, Algeria has yet to score a single goal in either of their games. The U.S. has a total of three goals overall thanks to top players like Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, and Michael Bradley.

The U.S. goalie is also a key reason why the U.S. should have no problem winning against Algeria in the upcoming match. In game one, Tim Howard had six saves, keeping England to only one goal the entire game. In game two, Howard didn’t play as well and missed two saves that led to goals, but he can bring it back in game three and defend the U.S. goal and keep the Algerians at zero points in the World Cup.

As it stands right now, Slovenia has one more point in the standings than the U.S. does. But Slovenia will most likely either tie with England in their next game or lose to England in their next game.

Both of these scenarios are beneficial to the U.S. and could help push them through to the next round.

The U.S. has so far tied with both England and Slovenia. Slovenia beat Algeria in the first game of Group C, and if the U.S. can play like they did against England and score like they did against Slovenia, then the U.S. can also beat the Algerians and advance to round two of the World Cup.
