Arsenal Transfer Prospect: Will Carlos Vela's Injury Mean He May Be Sold?

Callum D'SouzaJun 22, 2010

After a disappointing 2009-2010 campaign, Arsenal striker Carlos Vela was extremely eager to reinstate his worth for his country of Mexico in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Vela, who has a tendency to perform much better with his country, could only muster 20 appearances and two goals last term for the Gunners. This lacklustre effort had critics and fans contemplating whether the Mexican striker should be offloaded in the Summer.

However, Arsene Wenger felt a strong World Cup campaign would see the 21-year-old back into promise and reassure Arsenal fans. But sadly, a leg injury has seemingly cut short the former Osasuna loanees cup.

After featuring impressively in Mexico's opening round encounter with hosts South Africa, Mexico then encountered France where the "Tri Colours" whitewashed the French 3-0. However the win was marred due to an injury to Vela which is set to see him out for at least 10 days.

Mexico still have one group game left and, though they are set to advance to the round of 16, it is unlikely they will go much further. This raises the question of what will now happen with young Carlos Vela?

Blessed with pace, flair, and potential, Vela has all the traits to become the next lethal striker in World Football. Granted he has never really been offered a premium opportunity by Wenger, the Mexican international needs to play consistent football rather than warming the bench.

But the Arsenal manager has recently added lanky striker Marouane Chamakh to his roster, which ensures a forward line of Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner, Chamakh, Eduardo Da Silva, Jay Simpson, Andrei Arshavin, Theo Walcott, and Vela.

A packed, talented front-line. Although injuries will be a factor, it grows increasingly unlikely Vela will crack into the Arsenal first team on a regular basis. The young forward is versatile and can be utilized as a striker or on the wing.

Time will tell what happens with Vela and Mexico but with Vela in doubt to appear for the remaining Mexican matches, will Carlos Vela be sold?
