FIFA World Cup 2010: Portugal Hit Seven Goals Past Korea, Has WC Been Set Right?

Zaakir HoosenJun 21, 2010

After a somber start to the 2010 World Cup, it seems the party has finally started down south. Brazil started with a 3-1 victory over the Ivorians last night in Johannesburg and Portugal just continued with a seven-goal thrashing of the Koreans in Cape Town.

Portugal needed a good goal difference going into the all-awaited match against the Brazilians in Durban on Friday, but Coach Quieroz definitely didn't expected such a delightful scoreline.

With so many draws and low-scoring matches, many complained that the World Cup has no spark. After 11 goals from just two games, it only can get better.

Ronaldo, who looked frustrated as he couldn't get enough of the ball, seemed to have difficulty finding the net. But after working hard consistently throughout the game, he found the net and made it 6-0.

Tiago scored his brace late in the match to finish the Koreans with a seven-goal belting, that now sees Korea DPR knocked out of the World Cup with their final group match to be played against Ivory Coast, who will hope to get something out of it as their chances now look even more slim.

This match somewhat asks the question, is there a problem with the ball? Ronaldo—whose powerful drive at the ball hit the upright—seems to have no issue with it.

On a rainy day out at the most southern point of Africa, Korea lost all its shape, and now will hope for some consolation come Friday, while on the other hand, the Portuguese will look forward to take on five-time World Champions Brazil.

Tonight's clash between Spain and Honduras is another game where lots of goals are expected. The Spanish lost their first encounter to the Swiss and will be hungry to show the world that they have quality within their ranks.

On paper, the Spanish pose one of the best and most well balanced teams with their bench hosting world class players.

Let's hope we see more goals, more drama, and more excitement as we get into the business end of the competition.
