Kaka Red Card: Was His Send-off Totally Unjustified?

Zaakir HoosenJun 21, 2010

In a night that saw the former World Champions rise to the occasion and present their best form in this years World Cup so far, a send-off that could have been one of the worst decisions in the tournament.

Brazil who were leading 3-1, until the 87th minute when it all started getting ugly on the pitch. A few bad tackles, players falling over and the referee put the team under pressure.

Kaka was backing up with Kader Keita behind him, Kaka nudged the Ivorian with the elbow in the chest with every replay showing it wasn't harmful at all.

This led to the Keita falling to the ground, covering his face as if he was punched by the "Rock".

The Ivorians reacted badly as they all tried to get some words across to the former World Footballer of the Year.

Kaka was shielded by his team mates, and as Kaka tried to explain to Chelsea star-man Drogba what had happened, the Referee made the decision and gave Kaka a second yellow card and ultimately a red.

Kaka will now miss the match against Portugal in Durban on Friday afternoon.

From the evidence presented in terms of video footage and action replays, it clearly shows Kaka nudging the player with his elbow, but Keita made so much more out of it. A red card was not the right route, clearly there was a lot happening at that time, all the referee needed to do was call the captains and give everyone a warning. If a card needed to be presented, Keita should have got one for simulation.

Taking into consideration that no major injuries occurred and also there was just two or three minutes left in the game.

At the end of it all, personally I think it was a great game, Brazil was outstanding, with the samba flair coming into its own.

A moment of madness from all the players, lead into a crazy decision from the referee rather than Kaka.
